Caption: Here is an intriguing photo from the 1960s. Although there is no information on this undated slide, it appears to show the "Northland" southbound at Cochrane with an unusually large train for the sparsely populated area. According to a 1962 timetable in my collection, No. 50 originated on CN at Hearst, departing at 2:30 PM and arriving at Cochrane at 6:00 PM before continuing south over the Ontario Northland at 6:30 PM. CN took the train over again at North Bay for the trip to Toronto (via the Newmarket sub to Washago and the Bala sub for the rest of the trip) arriving at 8:00 AM daily except Sunday. (In 1962, a second train--No. 46--ran Timmins and North Bay to Toronto using CN's Newmarket sub south of Washago. By 1967, there was only one train south of North Bay and train service had been cut back to Kapuskasing with a bus to Hearst and connecting ONR trains between Timmins and Porquis.)
