![C424s 3214 and 3228 lead a transfer over the Lachine Canal on a summer's evening in 1984. Built in 1966 and 1967, these units were 2 of 18 still active when the 1985 Canadian Trackside Guide was published. Unlike CP which kept many of its C424s into 1998, CN retired or sold all of its C424s by 1989. Note the Canal Bank industrial spur curving off from the Montreal sub to the left in the photo (and also to the right--not visible in the photo).](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/CN3214transfer-St-Henri-20July1984-200x150.jpg)

![Until the "Pepin cutbacks" in November 1981, the Manitoba towns of Thompson, The Pas, and Dauphin had six day per week train service to and from Winnipeg. Three days per week, train trains to Winnipeg originated in Churchill and in Thompson the other three days per week. This latter train typically ran with an F7Au, an SGU, a baggage car, a buffeteria coach, and a full coach and is seen arriving at the station in The Pas at dusk. By late morning, this train will be in Winnipeg. ("Fun facts": the photographer arrived in The Pas on the tri-weekly Railiner from Saskatoon and missed photographing the tri-weekly mixed from Lynn Lake which had already arrived!)](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/CN915090-The-Pas-18May1978-200x150.jpg)

![By the mid-1980s, GP9s and RS18s were no longer main line power on CN and CP, often holding down road switcher, transfer, and some yard assignments. On a September Sunday afternoon, CN GP9 4366 (renumbered from 4106 in 1984) and RS18 3668 power a transfer at Pointe St. Charles. In the nearby back shop, GP9s are being rebuilt into slugs or GP9rm--the 4366 would become "slug mother" 7262 in 1990 while the 3688 would be retired but was active into at least 1989.](http://www.railpictures.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/CN4366transfer-Pte-St-Charles-15Sept1985-200x150.jpg)
