I'm not too sure of the ID of this train, but it's either 331 or 422 starting up again after being held up by a boat in the Seaway. This past week, the canal has been super busy and held up not only 330 again tonight, but a late 421 that was at Glenridge when this was shot (note the green signal in the background). Looks like summer has fully blossomed too, as the Bruce Trail I took here was super overgrown and thankfully I didn't find any ticks after multiple checks. Always remember to check many times for ticks, even if you're wearing long pants. I have found many in this location before.

Trillium 1859 climbs up the Thorold grade, one of the steepest in all of Canada. I was a little confused with it's load, a single autoparts car, considering they don't serve any places that ship out autoparts. Anyways, this line, the Thorold Spur, was once a main line that served as a connector from Niagara Falls to St Catharines. After the Stamford Sub was built through Niagara Falls, this line was no longer needed, and eventually, the main bridge that connected the two cities (Bridge 10 in Thorold South) was dismantled in the late 90's. The only use it sees nowadays is Trillium a few times a week and that's it. The sound of an Alco climbing up this hill is quite the sound.

CP 646 sits in the dying light of a cold winter evening. Among the engines were CP 8572, BNSF 9053, and the one I was surprised by most, was ex-Seaboard System SD40-2 CSX 8153.

It's a rainy Sunday day in Niagara, and 3582 sits in the Merriton yard alone with it's train it put together Friday. The crew ran out of time after servicing a couple places in St Catharines, parked the train for the weekend and went to go relax for a couple days before coming back to take it to Welland on Monday. 3582 started off it's life as CN 2582, before being bought by RailLink and it became 3582. It become a TimberTrain engine before being bought by STER. 3582 was used down on the PCHR in the summer of 2012 while the other engines underwent work. After the STER was closed in 2014, PCHR acquired both of their engines for good. While 1842 was used for a while down in St Catharines, 3582 was used up in Port Colbourne and Welland. So when I saw this engine parked at Merriton, I was a bit surprised. Fast forward to 2017, and this engine spends most of its time parked at Atlas Steel. However, according to Trillium this engine still is in service, I guess it's a backup engine nowadays. With a new switcher being acquired from GATX for Trillium, I wonder how much use this engine will see in the future.

It's been a slow and bitter cold morning for railfanning, and while waiting for TR 1859, I ended up in Port Rob to catch what I believe is CN 530, a local job that brings cars from the Port Robinson yard to Feeder. 5671 was one of the units on CN 421 that morning. The other units will bring cars to Fort Erie for interchange. This train always runs long hood forward to Feeder yard.

It seemed like a normal Saturday morning, and in the middle of running errands I decided to make a stop by the station, as it would be around the time that CN 331 showed up. Sure enough, a headlight showed and I wasn't exactly sure what to expect, as foreign power was extremely common back at this time. But what I got was something even cooler. As 422 was just approaching the St Paul Street bridge, a long wave of fresh red, black and white paint was visible. A long string of new engines from Erie, making their first trip on the Grimsby Subdvision. The new engines were 2892, 28xx, 2983, 2886 and 2895. The fresh paint looked great on them, a refreshing look compared to the dirty GEVOS that are usually down here.

With speculation running high on what Trillium plans to do with their ALCOS, I thought it'd be a good time to go catch the Trillium again, just incase the rumors are true. While getting in location for this shot, I noticed that a ton of tracks from the old yard were still in place, probably last used in the 80's. Once a busy part of the railway, branching off the Lakeshore Spur, and the Grantham Spur, both famed lines in their prime known for street running and servicing unique locations. Now, this line sits very quiet when the Trillium isn't servicing it. These tracks date back to the days of NS&T, Niagara's famed Street Car service which ended in 1959.

TRRY 1859 navigates through the once busy Merriton yard long hood forward after servicing the scrap yard. It'll take the Grantham Spur to various industries in St Catharines. 1859 just missed a meet with a light powered CN 523 by a minute.

Ryan Gaynor's recent pic inspired me to upload some a Trillium picture. Trillium 1859 is seen here returning back from servicing a few industries in St Catharines, and preparing to head back to Welland. This was taken one year ago today, and I'd much rather have the weather in this photo, as I recall it being decently warm, and at least sunny.

Trying to fit railfanning into your school schedule isn't the easiest thing so I haven't been able to get trackside lately. So here's an older photo from when I actually had some free time.

Trillium 110 pushes a single car down the Grimsby Subdivsion a little later than usual. In the background, a snow covered Merriton yard can be visible.

I adventured down here a few days prior, and noticed that some weeds beside the North track had been cut down, so knowing that, I took advantage of some open areas today. But not all areas were brush free. I ended up waist deep in thorns trying to get over to the side, and pulled a couple muscles hoping up onto the platform. Overall, it was worth it, as I caught a meet between one of the weekend GO Trains, and Amtrak 98, who ironically was led by unit 98. As I clean all the cuts and upload this photo, I ask myself. Was it worth it? My answer? Totally.

I always here the same comment about the Grimsby Subdivision, whether it's when I'm railfanning along the line or posting photos online: "man, for a mainline it's awfully grassy." For a mainline, it's pretty overgrown. The line sees about 4 or 5 trains on a weekday and more on summer/holiday weekends when the GO train runs the line. The Grimsby is going to major changes though, as the line is being prepared for fulltime GO service. If they do cut down the weeds, it'll be open for some shots that haven't been clear for shots in a while, so I'm quite ready for that :)

The second train of the morning at the station seemed like any usual CN 421, until after I took this picture. As soon as I lifted the camera off my face, I realized that the 4th unit wasn't a white car, it was actually an engine! I tried to take a going away shot of it, but the early morning back lighting played a big factor in that photo. The 4th unit was AMT 1345, probably going somewhere to get repaired or painted. It was quite a surprise for sure. I said about two minutes before 421 went by "let's pray for something cool"...guess I got my wish.

A day of railfanning with fellow RP contributor Daniel Odette led to this discovery. While looking for the remains of the old CN Cayuga Sub, we found a long string of abandon hoppers, taken over by nature. While it seemed like they went on forever, there was 42 hoppers in total here. The Cayuga line was abandon in 1996 I believe. However, Trillium uses part of the line as storage. About a mile up the line, a ton of tank cars and of all things, Algoma Central passenger cars sit, not been moved in a long time. However, due to the condition of both the hoppers and the rails, I don't think these ones have been moved in a long time, nor will they be moved in a very long time either. For fun, I'm going to leave GPS coordinates off, so if anyone wants to find them, it'll be an adventure to locate them ;)

Trillium had just cleared the main line, and I was crossing Glendale Ave to see that the signal had gone green again. Expecting a late 422, I hurried into position where a light move rushed through. It missed a meet with the Trillium returning from the scrap yard by a minute, but none the less this was an awesome catch. The standard cab leader made it all the better. ID for this train is unknown but I'm assuming it was 524.

The first GO Train of 2015 arrives in St Catharines. Though I normally don't find interest in shooting the GO, shooting the first one of the year is always fun, and it adds it helps makes the Grimsby Sub a little more interesting. And before you ask, no I don't know the people waving to me :)

Knowing Heritage Unit 184 was on 97 yesterday, I expected just a regular unit to be leading 97 today. Much to everyone's surprise, when 822 appeared, everyone was a little surprised. I don't think we've ever had two different heritage units within two days here, which made for certainly a rare catch
