Hi, my name is Glenn Cherry and I reside in Hagersville, ON (formerly Garnet, ON). As such, I have listen to train whistles and followed the Southern Ontario Railway and the CN Hagersville / Nanticoke Subdivision closely for several years. My hobbies include Railfanning (primarily CAN & USA), Photography and being a 'G' Scale Train Modeller. My current camera is a Nikon D600.

Compagnie de gestion de Matane Inc. (COGEMA) is a subsidiary of Canadian National Railway (CN)operating a dedicated railcar ferry service within Quebec between Matane and Baie-Comeau; additionally providing occasional railcar ferry service to isolated rail networks at the ports of Port Cartier, Sept-Iles and Harve-Saint-Pierre. It also operates industrial switching to rail customers in Baie-Comeau. COGEMA began operations in 1975 and operates the company's only railcar ferry, the MV Georges Alexandre Lebel (Montreal). COGEMA was sold by CN to Quebec Railway Corporation during February 1999 when QRC also purchased the Matane and Mont Joli Subdivisions. In November 2008, CN re-purchased these assets from QRC.QRC 1819 and mate QRC 1851 are seen loading the Georges Alexandre Lebel for the afternoon run using 5 buffer cars and caboose CG79507 (almost hidden). The conductor rides in and conveniently operates from the rear of the caboose. A sister photo, albeit from a distance, depicts the whole of this neat, intriguing operation.

A pair of SD40-2's led by CP 5978 slowly canter eastward with a short train and soon to duck under the Pittock Conservation Area bridge on this peaceful afternoon as fresh snow softly enhances the landscape.

Picking up on Snake's recent and applicable comment "an area rich in skeletal remains of another area" to describe bridgework along side of the Canal and Harbour Spurs within Ontario's Niagara Region. TRRY 1859 is retreating lite power, northbound on the Harbour Spur and captured while cruising through this historic setting having previously completed assignment on the Government Spur. Still present to-day is the old, green railway bridge that crossed the then twin locks and later served as the western approach to Bridge 20. Bridge 20, also a vertical lift required to complete the canal crossing was built in 1929 by CN. Later with completion of the Port Colborne Harbour Railway in the mid 1990's connecting Port Colborne to rail lines on the western side of the Welland Canal, Bridge 20 became unnecessary and removed in 1997. Its stone base is still evident on the far bank in the lower, left of the scene. Straight ahead in the right secondary channel, two ships can be observed and perhaps tied down until next shipping season. And finally to the left is Bridge 21, another vehicular lift built in 1929 that still serves as a vital link connecting east and west Port Colborne via Clarence Street.

On this dull, winter's morning, TRRY 1859 trundles westbound, light power, through the massive archway of metal deck girders of Dain City's (formerly Welland Junction) 70 meter (230 feet) high twin-tower rail lift bridge. This narrow iconic 'vertical lift' rail bridge was constructed in 1927 for CNR and near identical to the nearby wider 1930 vehicular traffic bridge (Forks Road). Both bridges cross the abandoned section of the Welland Canal, a waterway in the Niagara Region,,connecting Lake Erie & Lake Ontario. No vertical lift capabilities were required for either bridge after 1980 and the towers of the vehicular bridge were subsequently removed. This old canal, renamed the Welland Recreational Waterway, hosts international rowing regattas and dragon boat races annually, and also the South Niagara Rowing Club.This side view photo looking east hopefully depicts both the height and narrowness of this intriguing rail bridge used exclusively this day by Trillium Railway. Craig Allen's masterpiece id= 24127 taken approximately five years prior captures its width and overall magnitude from Forks Road overlooking the stillness of the peaceful waterway. Mr. Allen picked a beautiful day to visit Dain City and was rewarded with a mixed freight of 8 cars and power to completely fill this neat, iconic structure.

An interesting snap shot of years past. I spent a week, during the spring of 2007, visiting dairy farms throughout BC's lower mainland and, simply by chance, came upon this intriguing scene. When checking out BC photos last week, I came across this amazing scene once again with its many semaphore signals (5) and cross-bucks (3 & 2 styles) intertwined with vehicle 3-way stop signs. I could not recall the exact location so began the search westward using Google Satellite starting from a modern dairy farm overlooking CN Matsqui Jct and the massive bridge over the Fraser River. The unique trackage design was quickly spotted at the intersection of Clayburn Rd and Riverside St (albeit clearly not so rural these days). I then hit 'search' on rpc and plugged in Abbotsford, BC ... and bingo ... the other half of the story and accompanying photo (id 10963) of 06 24 2013 as submitted by Christopher Wasney. The site of my interest being the Clayburn Diamond and activation hut, Abbotsford, BC. Southern Railway of BC was noted above as opposed to Canadian Pacific given I took the photo standing aside their trackage. Thanks Christopher for actually putting a train in the picture and for providing both the background and the not surprising update, etc.

OBRY's Credit Valley Explorer is seen taking advantage of a recent snowfall creating a scenic winter, rail tour of the Credit Valley and Fork of the Credit as the snow train travels from Orangeville to Snelgove and return. CCGX 4009 with snow train in tow scampers through the Alton area on another peaceful mid-day junket.

Home for Christmas and anticipated return to familiar trackage. RLHH 2081 GP38-2 (formerly RLK 3873)arrived Garnet Yard as the third unit, on SOR 597's return from Brantford, during the early hours of Friday, Dec 9th amidst the area's first dusting of snow. RLHH 2081 adorned in attractive G&W livery colours, and a favourite of several, has aged with brawn and beauty ... a masterful restoration for sure! RLHH 2081 and stable mates RLHH 3404 and RLHH 3403 parked on the yard track just north of the main yard switch are readied and snorting awaiting arrival of the day crew to commence switching assignments. It will be interesting to see if RLHH 2081 remains as power on the daily freight or takes over as switcher at the Esso refinery, Nanticoke. Autumn colours and sunny late afternoons on the Hagersville Subdivision ... not for long so enjoy now. RLHH 3404 and RLHH 3403 with train RLHH 595 have just passed MP 1.0 and will coast to a full stop at MP 0.87. The cut of cars from Garnet Yard RLHH 595 will be tied down with the linked power proceeding light and south onto the Esso / Hydro lead this day to extract a small string of cars. RLHH 3403 (leading north) and RLHH 3404 will utilize the switch at 0.0 to gain access to reverse onto the Stelco lead so as to free up the main line for QGRY 2301. QGRY 2301, Esso switcher, will then trundle north to MP 0.87, grab RLHH 595 and return back south to the Refinery compound. RLHH 3403 and RLHH 3404 will follow returning light through the switch to assist with switching duties at the Refinery and to extract the balance of this evening's train RLHH 597. The browns this week-end have clearly enhanced railfanning in this neck of the woods. (1st photo of SOR set)

RLHH 3404 and seemingly constant companion RLHH 3403 with two cars in tow are seen easing through the switch at CN Nanticoke 0.0 as they swing westerly onto the Stelco lead. They just tied down / unhooked their southbound train RLHH 595 on the main to divert west on the Stelco lead to Franklin yard and additional assistance at the Refinery. QGRY 2301 meets her livery mates on respective trackage as they exchange a series of blasts while crossing the pavement Concession 3. QGRY 2301 will flip the switch and escort RLHH 595 further south to the Refinery compound. Note this photo represents a different day than the other three related postings and a slightly different maneuver but the game plan achieves the same purpose. RLHH 595 is handed off from the Garnet power / switchers to the Esso switcher at either MP 0.87 or MP 0.0 Hagersville Subdivision. The switch at CN Nanticoke and the Stelco lead are conveniently located and instrumental to this handly maneuver. (Photo 2 of SOR set)

QGRY 2301, Refinery switcher, poses amidst a grove of Autumn browns at MP 0.87 of the Hagersville Subdivision while retrieving a cut of cars designed this day for Imperial Oil (ESSO) at Nanticoke. This string of southbound cars assembled earlier at the marshaling yard at Garnet and dropped / tied down, just short of Concession 4 Walpole, by RLHH 3404 lead & RLHH 3403. In keeping with today's game plan, the two stable mates are temporarily parked on the Stelco lead MP 0.01 with a string of cars picked up minutes before at the refinery which, in turn, will form part of to-nites northbound train RLHH 597. Two appropriately coloured pumpkins at Garnet on Halloween ... trick n treat for me. RLHH 3404 and RLHH 3403 have been busy with switching duties at Garnet Yard for most of the afternoon. The conductor seen here is about to cut the power away from a large string of tank cars and then proceed light power further south to the old CN Cayuga Subdivision and its connecting link to do additional switching involving a 'full' track of stored tank cars. The little white rectangle deep in the marshaling yard, to the left of the main, is actually the sign post CN Garnet MP 4.7 The next action for the orange n black locos was captured and submitted by Joe Bishop, fellow contributor, photo #26737. RLHH 595 was assigned as the symbol given the train being assembled at this point will eventually head south to Nanticoke.

Here is another photo featuring the much traveled locomotive with a coat of many colours. RLK 3873, in Rail Link livery, with stablemates RLK 4057 and RMPX 9431 are coasting home to Garnet with SOR 595 in early morning light. When looking at this photo taken a mere 6 years, one is quickly reminded just how much livery colours and landscapes have changed. This submission is intended to compliment recent photos and info supplied by James Gardiner and Joe Bishop (RLHH 2081 in Genesee & Wyoming colours) and Rob Smith (TOR 2000 in New Hampshire & Vermont livery). Welcome back 'Queen' and hopefully to trot on the Hagersville Subdivision and my favourite turf Garnet!

Colourful consist, sunshine / clear skies and scenic foliage ... this railfan's delight! OSR 1400 FP9u and OSR 1620 GP9 chug back through Woodstock Yard heading west for home rails (after performing a series of shunting moves) with some mixed freight and a large lift of autoracks retrieved from Coakley for return to Ingersoll.

The Jarvis Railway Station, a local landmark, finally embarked on its second leg of the 2 mile+ junket departing from its century acreage at the north end of the village of Jarvis at approximately 9:30 hours Tuesday, Oct 18th. The unique ‘union station’ with its two operator bays is to be re-located to the grounds owned by the Walpole Antique Farm Machinery Association (WAFMA) at the south end of town HWY 6. However to get this 40 feet 8” widest point x 30 feet high x 45 feet long structure to the relocation site, it had to be hauled a short distance east on the recently graded stone rail bed of the former CN Cayuga Subdivision (how appropriate is that?) then south across a clay field to a temporary resting spot at the intersection of HWY 3 and Regional RD 55. Drainage ditches on both shoulders of HWY 3 must be filled and leveled in preparation for a tight, diagonal crossing at 8:30 hours on Wednesday, Oct 19th. While overhead wires present challenges, the more critical part of the maneuver is guiding the station between two uprights (poles) with mere inches to spare on either side ... center, level and steady as she goes. Once clear of HWY 3, the last leg should be less hectic albeit though another serious of fields / open land and one more drainage ditch ... to hopefully transpire before any further rainfall. Also see info and photo id23995 dated 0327 2016 by Todd Steinman. The first leg actually took place on 13 04 2016 and simply involved moving the station off site to make way for another Tim Hortons coffee outlet.
In this photo, Cec ABRA Building Movers (Branchton, ON) can be seen turning south off of the firm rail bed of the former CN Cayuga Subdivision onto cropped fields. An 850 G Case long track was called on to provide pulling assistance to the Western Star on one brief occasion. The grey pickup truck (back right) is parked on the old rail bed. Southern Ontario Railway (SOR) still utilize 1 km+ portion of the CN Cayuga Subdivision (with connecting track to Hagersville Subdivision) east of Regional RD 55 for rail car storage. WAMFA is spear heading a community effort to save and relocate this historic structure as a museum and testament to the importance of railways to the heritage of the Jarvis area. Donations from interested parties gratefully received.

CP 9803, is on a solo mission, charging upgrade and westbound with a long train comprised of autoracks. Like Kevin Flood, I suspect this was the 1st of two CP 147's less than 30 minutes apart. Friday was another PD day for me, excellent conditions and opportune time to revisit Campbellville and its classic rail-fanning spot ... escarpment, private wooden bridge, rail type fence, track grade and enhanced by a timely touch of fall colouring.

RLHH 3049 is now in push mode as the empty ballast train shoves backward south to the ballast base camp at Hagersville for reloading #2. Note the four red-capped amigos standing behind the safety rail on RLHH 3049 and clearly enjoying the last two sunny hours before fall officially kicks in. Although on break, they blend in with livery colours while capitalizing on the birds eye view of the Grand, waterfall, flying honkers and fishing folk. The conductor of the day must have drawn the short straw given his uncomfortable southbound perch and corresponding sentinel duties. (third photo of three in series)

RLHH 3049 is on the point again this day powering the regular five car ballast train and rounding the curve (track also serves as the west leg of the Caledonia wye)on the main dropping ballast while working toward a westerly direction. This photo is a mate to #26251 crossing the Grand River albeit different loads and days. The ballast team (two on each side) started this second drop of the day just north of Sutherland Street at the start of the leg and are now seen clearing Orkney Street, Caledonia. During this 2-week ballast venture, RLHH 3049 can expect to be called for double duty and harnessed when needed on SOR's daily nocturnal freight. In fact, I hear the whistle from my open window for RLHH 597 blowing for King Street, Hagersville as I sign off 9:50 p.m.

RLHH 3049 slowly trundles north across the iconic bridgework over the Grand River at Caledonia, with its 1st trip of the day, hauling five aged / renumbered ballast cars (NERX 134, 122 123, 136 and OWSX 250730) just as the sun sneaks a timely peak out from behind a few cloud formations. The entire main from Nanticoke to Simpson Junction is in the midst of receiving new ballast. These 5 ballast cars were delivered to Hagersville by truck (OWS Railroad Construction & Maintenance, Petrolia) and deposited directly onto the rails of siding HD34. Likewise ballast originating from Woodstock and even home town Rock City is trucked in and stock-piled adjacent to HD34. Each ballast train is trans loaded within 45 minutes, while snoozing on HD34, by RF Almas Co. Ltd (Hagersville) using a rugged CAT 1T286 Payloader.

What does a School Crossing Guard do on a ‘PD’ or Professional Activity Day? If a raifan, seize the opportunity to take a trackside ‘Photo Day’ of course! While chasing the Trillium Railway’s Friday solo powered freight northbound from Dain City on the Canal and Thorold Spurs to Merritton, I observed several intriguing trackage configerations, couple of neat switching moves and an abundance of Seaway traffic on the Welland Canal. The most time consuming and complex move of the day goes to the tick-tack-toe 4-point switching maneuver required to cross the double tracked Grimsby Sub both northbound from Thorold to Merriton & St Catharines and then vice-versa when southbound back home to Dain City. The “PD’ or photo of day goes to Ontario’s Trillium 1859 and four clean box cars parading diagonally and boldly across Merritt & Seymour to pose briefly with Tim Horton’s impressive Canadian, Maple-leaf billboard. I can’t think of a more fitting image for a proud Canuk coffee loving railfan from Ontario enjoying a sunny, trackside ‘PD’ holiday?

KUDOS to Trillium Railway Co. LTD., a short line railway founded in 1997, currently operate the Port Colborne Harbour Railway (PCHR) serving 19 customers on its 50KM long network located in the Niagara Region providing interchange with both CN and CPR.
