Keewatin Railway Company 2401 has just doubled three coaches and a baggage car from the shed track at left to the main line on top of some freight traffic from the HBRY yard. The 2401 (ex HBRY, SLQ, CN 3512) would then run around the train and trail behind HBRY GP40-2W 3005 on the trip north to Pukatawagan MB. I remember wondering to myself where all the passengers were, that question was answered when two vans labeled "Manitoba Corrections" arrived.

Here is another favourite shot of mine taken on CP' Whitefox Sub. This is just outside the town of "Love" Saskatchewan. I remember arriving at this crossing well ahead of the train and being unsure if I was still on the Whitefox sub or if this was a spur that hadn't seen a train for years! I also remember walking down from the crossing and kicking vegetation aside to see if there were even still rails under it !

Nothing says BC Rail like tough grades and remote country. Here is a view looking back as we head north from Taylor BC. Mile post 720 is on the opposite side of the unit, while mile 715 is at the curve just before the bridge over the Piece River, needless to say there are some steep grades in these 5 miles of former PGE track. Also worth mentioning is the remoteness of the area on the other side of the river (the south side). If you look to the right of the fire extinguisher symbol on the door of the unit you will notice a large break in the tree line, this is the gravel pit at Teko (around mile 713). To reach Teko by road from this same location one has to drive over 200km.

With winter just around the corner I thought this pleasant image might put people in the mood for some winter railfanning. Although to be fair this was not a day of railfanning but rather a cold day at the office. I was called as the cndr on a 313 relief crew out of North Battelford SK after it needed to double the hill just west of town. This shot is taken after doubling together the sections and walking up 60 or so car lengths only to find out that we were still not charged up enough to pull yet. So before taking off the winter gear I figured I would grab a photo of the lovely weather, the lovely weather that is soon to return.

Nipawin SK has one heck of a bridge, too bad it sees so few trains. This was one of only four trains to use it in 2007, though reportedly in 2004 it wasn't used at all. I imagine it sees slightly more use now that CP has sold the line to a shortline called Torch River Rail.

In summer 2008 a bunch of CP brass wanted to see operations on the company's secondary route across the prairies, so this fine looking set of equipment was called upon. The trip originated in Calgary and only made it to Edmonton before encountering its first hurdle. Being that several wheel sets on the coaches had been b/o'd and needed to be swapped out. Late the next day they were on the move again and made it to Hardisty. The next morning they found that one of the units was completely out of fuel and the other was low. No fuel truck arrangements could be made so before leaving Hardisty the decision was made to steal an SD40-2 off another train. So another late start put them only at Wilkie (about 120 miles away) by days end. The next morning the SD40 was removed, the F's were filled up and this thing was getting closer to me. But when taking the siding at Biggar for a meet, a wheel set on one of the coaches derailed. It was nothing too serious but it caused another significant delay and it was quite late by the time they made it into Saskatoon that night. The next morning all seemed to be well as I chased them eastward and made this shot on the Sutherland Sub at Plunkett. But sure enough... Not long after they left the Sutherland and began there journey southward on the Lanigan Sub, they encountered a good old fashioned tie replacement program. A little under four hours was spent waiting to be let through the foreman's limits, during which the crew gave there rest notice (to be in and off in 10 hours) and all kinds of panic and plans could be heard over the scanner. In the end the crew wound up working over in return for a taxi home from Regina afterwords. At Regina the train was reunited with the main line again and began its trip homeward towards Calgary, during which it had no problems at all. I hope the big wigs enjoyed there trip on the branch lines because I sure enjoyed hearing about and photographing it.

Its funny how looking at a picture can bring up all kinds of memories. I remember being called for this 453 around 0030 on Christmas eve 2009 with the usual lack of sleep beforehand. After grabbing our single SD40 from the Saskatoon diesel shops and tying on to our train in the yard, the "fun" began. Though I don't recall all the specifics, the next five or so hours can be summed up as total gridlock! Once we finally escaped, we had a lift and setout at Warman and a setout at Langham, all done in frigid darkness of course. Around 0900 I remember being on the home stretch to the hotel in North Battleford, when I looked in the mirror and thought, "I really should grab my camera.... nah screw it, too tired" and going back to the normal forward stare. But alas it wasn't long before common sense prevailed and memories were made.

CP tran 457 (Sutherland SK to Calgary AB) is headed up by CEFX 1045 and CP 8887 on January 20th 2009 as it passes over an ancient bridge near Kinley SK. I drove past this spot again on Sept 13, 2013 only to see that the bridge has been replaced by back fill and steel culverts.
