Ducking under Liverpool Road overpass, GO Transit GP40TC 9807 trails a westbound 3-car consist of Hawkers (with cab car 9855 leading) that has just departed Pickering GO Station, and is heading through the plant at "Liverpool" on CN's Kingston Subdivision.
<br><br>
As GO was still in its infancy, Pickering was the easternmost station on its initial Oakville-Pickering Lakeshore corridor, and the GO Sub didn't exist yet. The track branching off to the right on the incline is CN's York Sub, part of the "Toronto Bypass" project that helped divert CN freight traffic around Toronto and made a new GO commuter service possible.

In the 1980's, the TH&B's motive power situation was getting dire due to reliability issues with its small fleet of aging first generation diesels. Parent CP Rail was often lending 4-axle power including RS18, C424, and leased B&O GP38 units. Here, CP RS18's 8733 and 8791 lead TH&B GP9 401, NW2 51 and SW9 57 in a mix of 251 and 567 noise as they climb "the mountain" out of Hamilton with a heavy rock train, seen here at Dewitt Road on the ascent to Vinemount. The two switchers were some of the only ones in the fleet equipped with MU, so were often seen working mainline trains with TH&B's Geeps and leased CP power. In a few more years, motive power officials with CP would retire the TH&B's fleet of switchers, and have the Geeps (most ended up stored <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=1564><b>out of service at John Street</b></a> upon major failure) rebuilt as fresh <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=46873><b>CP 1680-series GP7u</b></a> and GP9u yard units.

On what appears to be a humid August day, CP SW1200RS 8124 passes through West Toronto with a short local or transfer freight, curving around the southwestern quadrant of West Toronto on the Galt Subdivision after coming north from the Parkdale area, and heading west towards West Toronto/Lambton Yards. This was taken looking south from the old vantage point of Old Weston Road overpass (partially visible on the right), that was closed off to traffic and eventually demolished during the 1980's. It was long a popular train-watching spot dating back to the <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=16093><b>steam era</b></a>.
<br><br>
Most of the train appears to be double door 40' boxcars (popular for lumber use), as well as a pair of PGE 50' combo-door boxcars. A wooden van brings up the rear past the platforms of West Toronto Station (demolished in the early 80's by CP while the City of Toronto was trying to have it designated with heritage protection status). The old parking lot and crane track are visible north of the station. In the background, notable buildings include Penfound Varnish (mural obscured by trees to the left), Viceroy Rubber at Dupont (middle), Tower Automotive (lone office tower in the middle background), and The Crossways Mall apartment towers (right). Some of this scene has remained the same, but much has changed dramatically.

TTC PCC 4384 operates on an eastbound Carlton run, diverting southbound over Parliament Street between Carlton and Gerrard. The streetcar is passing a row of Victorian-era houses home to Wayne Furniture, at the time celebrating its 45th birthday.
<br><br>
From some <a href=https://thecjn.ca/perspectives/from-the-archives-family-business/><b>research online</b></a>, it appears Wayne Furniture stated off selling Radios as the Wayne Radio Company at 446 Parliament Street in 1944. It was opened by Max Wainberg and his sons, and operated through three generations of the family. Other information on the business is hard to find, but it appears they may have closed down sometime in the 90's or early 2000's.

A trio of CN "Railiner" Budd RDC's with RDC-1 6114 trailing accelerate through Port Credit station, eastbound on the Oakville Sub crossing over the Hurontario Street underpass heading eastbound bound for Toronto.
<br><br>
A CP local freight is visible in the distance switching nearby, utilizing
interswitching rights over the CN Oakville Sub (that CP had running rights over to Hamilton Junction).
<br><br>
As well as the triple track mainline, there were a few service tracks, siding, storage and team tracks here at <a href=http://jpeg2000.eloquent-systems.com/toronto.html?image=ser12/s0012_fl1971_it0020.jp2><b>Port Credit</b></a>. A spur branched off south (out of view) to the old St. Lawrence Starch plant in Port Credit (demolished in the mid-90's).
<br><br>
Just visivle on the left was the old "shed track" that used to run behind the old CN Port Credit station to the freight shed beside it. The station was demolished sometime around 1973-75 (fell out of favour due to new GO facilities maybe?) and this became a team track.

Canadian Wheat Board covered hopper CNWX 100807 sits with two very new CNWX 390000-series "Single Wheat Sheaf" cars on the siding to the Marmill Feeds mill in downtown Markham, opposite the station and CN's Uxbridge Subdivision. Scenes like this hearken to times not too long ago when areas like Markham were rural communities rather than bedroom commuter suburbs of the GTA. Farmers would come into town with their haul of grain to drop off at the local town elevator, that would in turn load it into strings of boxcars or covered hoppers spotted on the siding for transport to domestic market customers or the ports for export.

Today instead of farmers bringing grain downtown, commuters flock in from the neighbourhoods that were once farmer's fields. Marmill Feeds would last into the mid-late 90's before the mill and other buildings on this property were cleared for a housing development and more GO Transit commuter parking. A nearby street bears the name "Marmill Way", hinting at the area's past.

"Cab rides" on a steam engine? Normal back in 1959: some railfans participating on a Buffalo NRHS chapter fantrip over Canadian Pacific in southern Ontario are treated to an up-close experience of the signs, sounds and smells of steam, seen here riding the tender and cab area of CP D10h 1092 as her and sister 1098 head north out of <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=47339><b>Orangeville</b></a> to wye their train at Fraxa Junction. Upon wying, the train will head back down the Owen Sound Sub to Orangeville in preparation for the trip back down the Orangeville Sub to Streetsville Junction. It's hard to pin down the exact location, but the train appears to be approaching Centre Street crossing near the north end of town, with a few trackside onlookers in the distance. Borrowed Chessie power was common on CP around this time, and four such units are shown loaning their horsepower here: Chesapeake & Ohio GP30 units 3006 & 3002 (the latter in the newer Chessie System colours) sandwich GP35's 3526 & 3539 on CP freight #52, rolling past the fields at Puslinch on CP's Galt Subdivision. C&O purchased a sizable quantity of GP30 units, EMD's stylish 2250hp turbocharged second generation 4-axle model of the early 60's, and followed up with more of the upgraded GP35 model (that boosed the 567D to 2500hp, but did away with the extra styling). They were both commom mainline power on <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=14951><b>C&O's own lines</b></a> in southern Ontario too.

Early bird gets the BUCP: Reg was at the Bayview Junction footbridge one morning to catch CP's BUCP freight (CR Buffalo to CP Toronto Yard) rolling through Bayview Junction, using trackage rights over CN's Oakville Sub to Canpa. CP rebuilt GP9u 8206 leads RS18u units 1805 & 1807, with a lengthy train stretched out under the York Blvd. bridge coming off CP at Hamilton Junction.

Trailing a short 4-car train of Hawker Siddeley single level commuter cars, GO Transit GP40TC 502 pushes eastward out of Union Station past the east switches of the "High Line" near the TTR Scott Street interlocking tower. One can see some of the industrial lands at the left that once populated the "West Donlands" area east of Yonge Street.

GO Transit GP40-2W 707 leads a 10-car train of bilevel commuter cars through Burlington West bound for Hamilton, after making its station stop at the nearby Burlington GO station. Cab car 205 trails the lead unit, and a 900-series APCU brings up the rear. The two tracks on the left are for CN's Halton Sub mainlines, branching off from the Oakville Sub here.

The <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=34977
><b>old station</b></a> (hidden by the train) was still in use by VIA at the time, but VIA would soon move its operations to the nearby GO station in another two years. Orange CN maintenance of way equipment sits stored on the Burlington West back tracks.

VIA RDC-2 6224 leads three other sister RDC's on a westbound passenger run near Bayview Junction, about to pass under Plains Rd. bridge. This is likely a Toronto-Niagara Falls train.
<br><br>
VIA 6224 has a bit of an interesting history, part of it evident in this photo. She was built as CP RDC-3 9023 by Budd in March 1955, later becoming part of VIA in September 1978. 9023 (still operating under CP colours for VIA) was wrecked at LaCombe AB in April 1980 (probably at a grade crossing accident while on the Calgary-Edmonton Budd run) and was repaired and repainted/renumbered as VIA 6357 by CN's Transcona Shops. 6357 didn't last long, as the unit was involved in another wreck at Balzac AB in August 1981, and this time Transcona repaired the car but also rebuilt it as RDC-2 6224 (a common conversion at the time that many VIA's RDC-3 units underwent: the RDC-2 featured more seating and a smaller baggage area). It was probably because of this latest accident that 6224 received its visibly noticeable carbody warping and sag, but the car soldiered on for VIA until retirement sometime in the 90's and was sold to Industrial Rail Services (IRSI) of Moncton NB in 2000. There it sat with many other RDC units as possible rebuild fodder, until IRSI experienced financial difficulties in the mid-2010's and most of the fleet was cut up for scrap metal. 6224 was finally cut up for scrap in January 2016.

Exercising trackage rights over CN to get to Nanticoke, CP RS18 8791 and leased C&O GP38 4828 lead a CP-TH&B Steel Train eastbound on CN's Cayuga Subdivision through Jarvis, just about to hit the Main St. N. crossing at the north end of town. The train came off CP (the old LE&N trackage) at Simcoe, and is heading eastbound over CN's Cayuga Sub between Simcoe and Garnett (east of Jarvis), where it will take CN's Nanticoke Sub south.

It's a busy afternoon down at the TTC's Humber Loop, one of the two west-end terminuses of the Queen streetcar line, and long a notable interchange point between TTC streetcars and buses in southern Etobicoke. Here, TTC PCC 4391 (middle) takes on a load of passengers next to the waiting room building before beginning its trip back east along Queen to Neville Loop. Inbound 4426 (right) waits behind, and on the left another 4400-series car (4415?) sits on the other loop track for a trip further west to Long Branch Loop. A TTC GM "fishbowl" bus on a connecting route sits behind the waiting building in the bus loop. All of this is viewed from the embankment of CN's Oakville Sub to the south.

<b>CN's Oakville Yard back in the day</b>: CN SW1200 7020 works the west end of Oakville Yard, switching a cut of empty open autoracks over Chartwell Road grade crossing and under the signal bridge spanning the yard lead and CN's multi-track Oakville Subdivision mainline. Little GMD switchers like 7020 were kept busy by the nearby Oakville Ford Plant, that took a steady stream of boxcars full of auto parts inbound, and autoracks full of new automobiles outbound.
<br><br>
The CN 7000-series were "straight" SW9/SW1200 units not equipped with the roadswitcher package, like CN's 1200-1300 SW1200RS units were, but otherwise they were identical in horsepower. Note the relatively clean paint, single-beam "garbage can" headlight, AAR-A style switcher trucks, lack of MU plugs or cables, dual spark arrestors, and "flippity-flappity" rooftop radiator covers.

As well as working the Steel Train out of Hamilton, CN's rebuilt F-units also found themselves on local wayfreight and work trains in the 80's. Here, CN F7Au's 9164 and 9169 sit in the TTR's Don Yard south of Cherry Street awaiting their next duties. CP business car 60 sits on an adjacent track.

What appears to be a CN switcher and transfer caboose sit on another track near the old Don Yard yard tower (single-level at the top, like the ones at Mimico and Canpa, but unlike the one at Bathurst Street). Also in the background is the Lever Brothers soap factory (opened in the early 1950's, closed in the late 2000's) at the foot of the Don River. Today the F's and yard tower are gone, but Don Yard still sees use as a layover facility for GO Transit.

You might have seen this photo in black-and-white before: maybe in the pages of Dean & Hanna's Canadian Pacific Diesel Locomotives book, or maybe on Ray Kennedy's <a href=http://www.trainweb.org/oldtimetrains/CPR_Toronto_Yard/locogallery1.htm><b>Old Time Trains</b></a> page on Toronto Yard.<br><br>Three of CP's six GMD SW9 switchers, 7403, 7400 and 7405 (all in faded script paint) work CP's Toronto (Agincourt) Yard, pulled back all the way to Kennedy Road on the hump lead while drilling a long cut of cars over the hump. On the right, CP #931 gets ready to depart westbound (power appears to be an M636, a GMD unit, one of the two 900-series leased Alco RS27's, and an FB unit)<br><br>The six 1200hp SW9 units were built by GMD London in 1953 and were the highest horsepower switchers on CP's roster at the time, and they pre-dated CP's later SW1200RS units by a number of years. They were initially based in Western Canada out of the Kootaney-Kettle Valley territory for work train and snowplow use, and later transferred to Calgary-Revelstoke. Photos show them at Field, Revelstoke, and Banff, sometimes in use switching passenger consists out. They were equipped with larger separate front numberboards, 3-chime air horns and spark arrestors (later removed), a practice CP did for units that would sometimes see mainline use. Some appear to have also worked out of New Brunswick for a brief time. In the mid-1960's they were all rounded up and sent east to be the main hump power at CP's new Toronto Yard in Agincourt.<br><br>As part of their conversion to hump duties, the six 7400's were fitted with non-standard MU (first only on the rear, then 7400-03 on both ends) intended to run in multiples, and received a few other modifications: 7400-7403 were equipped as hump mother units with cab signals, slow speed hump control, and had their 3-chime horns re-mounted on the roof for a signal receiver to be mounted in the original horn bracket. 7404 and 7405 ended up as trail use only, and just had MU on the rear and no signal receiver equipment. The units originally operated in sets of two, but when more power was needed they ran in sets of three, with three Toronto-assigned SW1200RS units joining them to give enough units for another set of three for hump use (in trail-use only, with the 7400's receiving standardized MU at that time).<br><br>The six SW9's worked through three different paint schemes during their time at Toronto Yard (block, script here, and then <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=16866><b>action red</b></a>) until the early 80's when they were rebuilt at Winnipeg's Weston Shops under CP's 10 year motive power plan as SW9u units 1200-1205 (not in order). As GP9u's took over hump duties, the SW9's found other yard and local switching work. Some were deployed elsewhere on the system, others eventually converted to 1000-series slugs for use with GP9u mother units. Three CN GP40-2L(W) units and two GP9's are smoking it up as they howl by a lone passenger waiting at the old stone 1856 GTR Georgetown Station in the afternoon. They're working hard on a westbound extra freight, climbing the grade from the Credit River leading to Silver. Zebra-striped power, a weedy station track, GO single-levels in the "commuter compound", an old baggage cart by the station and some vintage autos peg this shot in the 70's-80's.

<b><i>"Traintown Toronto"</i></b>: CP Rail #12, the southbound Sudbury-Toronto section of "The Canadian", pulls into downtown Toronto at Bathurst Street behind an FP7 and RS10.
<br><br>
There's lots of 70's goodies that fill this busy scene: stainless steel action-red Budd cars, wooden CN vans, 40' boxcars, the old Bathurst St. yard tower. Most prominent however are CN's Spadina roundhouse and servicing facilities in the background, teaming with the usual GMD and MLW passenger power of the time. The steam-era coal tower, wash racks, ready tracks and coachyard complete the scene.
<br><br>
Also visible in the distance is the TTR's Central Heating Plant, and 1 Yonge Street (Toronto Star office tower). The amount of trees in the distance near the roundhouse is oddly perplexing to see downtown.

Slow weekday afternoons in the Union Station Rail Corridor were always good for a few trains: some Lakeshore West-East runs, a few VIAs, and "The Bramalea Flip" afternoon Georgetown-line service between Brampton (Bramalea) and Toronto. Here, GO Transit F59PH 521 ducks under Spadina Avenue, departing Union Station on the tail end of afternoon train #263 to Bramalea station. She will be back later with #266, and then depart around 3pm again on #281 for the downtown Brampton station.
<br><br>
Newly minted from GMD in July 1988, GO 521 ran in Toronto commuter service for two decades until retirement and sale to RB Leasing (RBRX) in 2009, eventually ending up on NC Dot (North Carolina) as cab control unit 105.
<br><br>
The Toyota on Front auto dealership and the National Post newspaper building in the background have both since been demolished and redeveloped with new condos.
