CN GP40-2L(W) units 9401 and 9410 bracket GTW GP40-2 6409 on a Laser intermodal train, working the north end of CN's Brampton Intermodal Terminal at Queen Street (Highway 7) in Brampton.<br><br>Surrounding the terminal is farmland, once all part of rural Chinguacousy Township before the satellite city of Bramalea was envisioned in the late 1950's to build up a new suburban enclave northwest of Toronto and east of Brampton. Residential neighbourhoods and industrial areas sprung up throughout the 60's and 70's, and in 1979 the new Brampton Intermodal Terminal opened on the east end of what is now amalgamated Brampton. Ratty CP FA1 4016 works with SW1200RS 8161 on an extra east (handling what appears to be 2-bay open hoppers) eastbound on the Belleville Sub near Darlington through a winter countryside. The location is a bit difficult to pin down, but this may be rounding the bend at Prestonville Road around Mile 170. By this point in time, maroon and grey units weren't rare, but the cowl units had started to lose their beaver shields and ran around like this (many had their yellow stripes connected over the missing shield) until getting action red or retirement.
<br><br>
Two oddities lead this train:
<br><br>
8161 was one of the three regularly assigned SW1200RS units on the old Grand River Railway (CP Electric Lines), based out of Preston, Ontario: <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=19625><b>units 8160-8162</b></a>. They were usually sent to Toronto for inspections and heavier repairs, and then sent back west to Galt for the GRR. Evidently today, 8161 managed to wander off east of Toronto to work this extra, making GRR wait a little bit longer to get "their" unit back from Hogtown.

And "4016" has an even more checkered history:

According to the "Canadian Pacific Diesel Locomotives" book by Dean & Hanna, the original FA1 4016 was wrecked in a collision in Maine in 1957, and sent to MLW to be rebuilt in a new body as RS10 8824, outshopped later that same year. It retained 4016's builder's number.
<br><br>
The 4016 number slot remained empty until a second 4016, seen here, was built in 1966 from retired FA1 4014. The 4014 was one of many first generation units CP retired and traded in to GMD and MLW on higher horsepower second generation power in the mid-60's. In this case, 4014 was retired and traded in to MLW for new C424 4249 in February 1966.
<br><br>
Around the same time, RS10 8557 was damaged due to an electrical fire in Thamesville in January 1966. To rebuild her, the shell of 4014 was purchased back from MLW, and CP combined the parts from both to build a "new" FA1, numbered as the second 4016 (likely after 4015, the lowest-numbered FA1 unit remaining), and outshopped it in March 1966. There's a photo in the CP Diesel book of Angus Shops taken in March 1966 showing 8557 and "an unknown FA1" (4014) in the shop together during the rebuild process. As with most of the FA/FB fleet, the new 4016 ran until it was <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=47601><b>tied up and stored at St. Luc in 1975</b></a>, officially retired in 1977, and scrapped.

TTC PCC 4641 (an A11-class ex-Cleveland car) heads westbound on Queen Street West past Bay Street with a 4400-series A7-class car trailing, operating in MU service on the busy Queen route. Two other cars can be seen together heading eastbound in the distance. MU couplers were maintained on the 4400- and 4600-series PCC's for multiple unit operation on the busy Bloor/Danforth and later Queen routes.
<br><br>
The streetcars are passing by ongoing construction on the new Four Seasons Sheraton Hotel (opened 1972, now Marriott's Sheraton Centre), which replaced a row of old stores along here that were demolished in late 1964 (among them, Henry's Camera was once located here at 63 and later 111 Queen Street W, before moving to Church when the strip of buildings were demolished in 1964). The old Toronto Dominion Bank building remains for now (replaced with a modern TD banking pavillion later on).

In the background is the new Simpson Tower (built 1968), build adjacent to the flagship Simpsons department store (in the distance) at Queen and Yonge, a popular stop for streetcar and subway patrons for decades.

An all-GMD/EMD consist rolls through Guelph Junction on a sunny July afternoon: Extra 5003 West, with CP GP35's 5003, 5020, leased <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=32121><b>N&W SD40-2 1651</b></a>, and little SW1200RS 8124 trailing. The edge of the <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=39147><b>station</b></a> is visible to the left, with replacement crossing gates stationed nearby. An old CP heavyweight passenger car demoted to OCS/work service sits on a track behind. Any hints as to whose car is parked on the right?

May 1st is the annual anniversary of the famed 1960 CPR Tripleheader from Toronto to Orangeville and back, although this year just a little sadder as at the end of 2021 the line was abandoned and is to be ripped up for a rail trail, parkland, and real estate redevelopment (a fate all too common in decades past).<br><br>From happier days, railfans and their cameras are out and about as CPR 4-4-0 136 and 4-6-0 D10's 815 and 1057 lead their train northbound on the Orangeville Sub through Brampton, crossing Jessie Street in the background. They're about to cross Queen Street (one of the main thoroughfares) and pull up to the old <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=43694><b>CPR Brampton Station</b></a> downtown. The switch here south of Queen was for a passing track that ran north to just south of the diamond.<br><br>136 and 1057 survive on the South Simcoe Railway, and the old station was "reconstructed" (rebuilt, expanded, modernized) in the Mount Pleasant area as a community centre, but the old Orangeville/Owen Sound Subdivision from Streetsville to Orangeville (built by the Credit Valley Railway in the 1870's), surviving until recently as the <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=35631><b>Orangeville Brampton Railway</b></a>, will soon be relegated to the history books.<br><br><i>Original photographer unknown, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide (with some photo restoration/colour correction done).</i>

An unknown GO 900-series APCU (former ONR FP7 convered into a HEP cab car) leads a short Richmond Hill line train northbound on CN's Bala Sub just south of CN Rosedale, as seen from on top of the <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=39089><b>Bloor Viaduct</b></a> one sunny Summer evening in 1979.<br><br>The train is heading northbound through Toronto's Don Valley out of the city on CN's Bala Subdivision, that runs parallel to Bayview Avenue on the right. Visible on the left is the namesake Don River, and on the other side the <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=39926><b>Lower Don Trail</b></a>, CP's <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=46919><b>Don Branch</b></a> (Belleville Sub) and the Don Valley Parkway. Beyond that is Riverdale Park East, and Broadview Avenue at the top of the hill. The rounded building in the distance is the old Riverdale Hospital (now Bridgepoint Hospital, and the old building pictured has been demolished and replaced). The ditch lights of newly rebuilt CP SD40M-2 5491 cut through the rain as it leads an SD40-2, a Conrail GE and a rebuilt GP9u on freight #526 north on the Hamilton Sub, coming around the curve at Main Street near Aberdeen Yard in Hamilton.<br><br>More set in expanding their fleet with secondhand SD40-2's and not impressed by new SD50's or SD60's, CP briefly looked to the rebuild market in the early-mid 90's as a way to acquire more power. Around this time, other railroads like SP and MARC were turning to locomotive rebuilders like MK to satisfy their motive power needs in an economical or specific way that the large builders weren't able or willing to. MK was "building" a large 133-unit order of SD40M-2's for SP using old cast-off SD40 and SD45 locomotive cores acquired secondhand through other railroads, lease fleets, backshop deadlines, etc, and CP decided to place a sample order of 10 SD40M-2 units in 1995. Basically, MK took an old SD40 or SD45 and rebuilt it to SD40-2 standards, complete with either replacing or cutting down the V20 engine blocks in the SD45's into 16-cylinder 645's. The CP units were a mix of SD40 and SD45's originating from a handful of different railroads (SP, UP, C&O, D&RGW), with 5491 originally being built as UP SD40 3022. This experiment was brief and did not result in any follow up orders, as later that year the first of CP's new modern AC-powered <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=7279><b>GE AC4400CW's</b></a> arrived, and the rest was history. The SD40M-2 units fared as well as the rest of CP's SD40-2 fleet, and at one point some found themselves in yard service in <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=37580><b>Thunder Bay</b></a> and <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=15249><b>Calgary</b></a>.<br><br><i>Karl Bury photo, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.</i>

New VIA power? In 1989 that meant more modern HEP-equipped 3000 horsepower F40PH-2D locomotives! At the time a third order of units were being cranked out by GMD London for VIA (6430-6458), and one of which, VIA 6455 (built mid-1989) leads 6423 (from the second order, 6420-6429, built in 1987) on train #73 as they climb the grade at Mile 1 of CN's Dundas Sub passing some of the leftover fall foliage trackside. A steam generator car and 11 of the blue and yellow fleet of ex-CN passenger cars make up the consist, painted to match the old F-unit fleet that VIA ran since startup.

Six high-horsepower road units put their combined 18,600 horsepower to work pulling a rerouted CN #431 out of the <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=41004><b>Townline Tunnel</b></a> on the climb out from underneath the Welland Canal. CN SD40-2W 5356, M636 2315, GP40's 9306, 9307, 9308 and GP40-2L(W) 9402 are typical of the mid-80's CN mainline power of the era, of which the widecab units faired best in terms of longevity.
<br><br>
The train is coming out of the tunnel on CN's Cayuga Sub near Brookfield, the other two tracks being CR's former Canada Division (CASO) line (sold to CN & CP two years earlier) and a middle shared track. The line through here, once a part of the busy New York Central corridor through Southern Ontario, today is a shadow of its former self in terms of trains and trackage.

<i><b>Snowy winter branchline railroading</b></i>: CN GP9RM 4103 and another unit come off the Midland Sub at Midland Junction in Orillia, entering Mile 86.1 of the Newmarket Sub south of Front Street South crossing. A blue-painted CN billbox is fastened to the station name sign post, with a switch broom at arm's length away to clear out any snowy switch points encountered. VIA/CN's old Orillia Station can be seen in the distance, and behind that some OCS work cars on the other leg of the wye.
<br><br>
Once reaching from Lindsay to Midland, by this time the Midland Sub only ran from Mile 42.7 (Orillia) to 75.2 (Midland), and was one of the many small southern Ontario branchlines on borrowed time. Following dwindling traffic, the line was approved for abandonment in sections during 1994 and 1995 and lifted, followed by CN abandoning the Newmarket Sub north of Barrie (Mile 63) through Orillia to Longford (Mile 93.0) in September 1995, and removing it in 1997-98. Only the Orillia Station, restored in 1989 but recently put up for sale by the city, remains as a reminder of the railway's presence in town.
<br><br>
An <a href=https://otc-cta.gc.ca/eng/ruling/70-r-1995><b>abandonment filing</b></a> noted service on the Midland Sub was provided five days per week from a Barrie-based wayfreight, with traffic mainly being inbound loads of plastics and outbound loads of aggregate from Uhthoff.

Crossing bells ringing herald CP SW1200RS 8139 arriving at Burlington West with a short local, coming off the CN Oakville Sub and heading down the east leg of the wye with a single tank car and steel offset-cupola van in tow. The short train is crossing over the Brant Street underpass, about to cross the Grays Lane crossing that provided access to the old CN station nearby.<br><br>For many decades dating back to the steam era, CP freight and passenger trains had running rights over part of the CN Oakville Sub from Union to Hamilton Junction (apparently to prevent CP from building their own parallel line from Union Station west). CP also ran their own local jobs to switch customers along the way. TTC PCC 4371 rattles through the intersection of Queen Street and Beech Avenue, heading eastbound through "The Beaches" neighbourhood on the Queen route for nearby Neville Loop. The Dodge pickup appears to be waiting to make a left-turn or U-turn at the intersection.<br><br>The Chalet Steakhouse, Restaurant & Tavern in the background appears to be undergoing renovations. A 1970 Pontiac Grand Prix cruises by some small businesses that lined the street as TTC PCC 4528 passes southbound on the short-lived Mount Pleasant streetcar route during its final week of operation in July 1976. A TTC line truck for overhead work is visible waiting at the light at Manor Road, and beyond that signage for the Crest Theatre. A car nearby sports a yellow "City" plate on back (taxi?). The blue and white AMC Gremlin on the right may have been owned by Bryce (a similar one was seen in some of his other photos).<br><br>In the final year of streetcar service on Mount Pleasant Road, the Mount Pleasant portion of the St. Clair streetcar that ran between St. Clair subway station and Eglinton Loop (Eglinton/Mount Pleasant) was separated into its own route, the Mount Pleasant streetcar, that operated until it was discontinued at the end of July 1976.<br><br><i>J. <b>In the shadow of retail giants</b>: TTC PCC 4343 is operating on a Downtowner tripper run eastbound to Bingham loop, paused at the lights on Queen Street at Yonge Street. This was long a major downtown Toronto retail corner as on the north side (right) was Eaton's famed Queen Street store, and on the south side was Simpson's (later The Bay's) flagship Toronto location. A Woolworth's was present at the north-west corner, tucked into but separate from Eaton's. The Yonge and Queen streetcar lines ferried Toronto shoppers to/from the downtown department stores here for decades, and eventually the Yonge Subway provided more direct store access and more efficient service (note the TTC subway marker signs hanging on both stores). A Ford C-series cabover truck waits at the light alongside (possibly a Bell utility truck).<br><br>The Eaton's Queen Street department store, built on land parceled together from various storefronts along Yonge and Queen over the years, was part of Eaton's sprawling downtown holdings which <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=45789><b>included buildings</b></a> for mail-order, catalogue, manufacturing, distribution and a secondary <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=30851><b>Annex/budget store</b></a>. Despite being spruced up with a coat of white paint, it was all on borrowed time: to the north Eaton's was busy building their new flagship Toronto store at Dundas Street (1 million square feet of retail space) as part of their new Eaton Centre shopping mall development. It would open in February 1977, and the Queen Street store would close and be <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=35307><b>demolished</b></a> for the next phase of mall development. The Woolworths store at the corner was spared the wrecking ball (it has been undergoing restoration in present times). Three TTC PCC streetcars rumble westbound on Queen Street East early one warm morning, passing some road work going on around Kent Road. TTC 4346 on a westbound Kingston Road run to McCaul Loop leads the pack, with two other cars passing by road crews digging up the pavement. One of the ubiquitous yellow Toronto police cars sits on Woodward Avenue nearby, watching over everything.

<b>A trip down St. Clair</b><: TTC PCC 4514 (as a 1951-built A8-class, the "newest" PCC's in the fleet) heads eastbound on St. Clair Avenue West on the 512 bound for the Yonge Subway line (St. Clair station loop). It's seen here crossing Vaughan Road, mixed in with afternoon traffic. I spy an early Honda Civic, an International Harvestor S-series truck operating for Maritime Ontario, a Mister Donut, a Pizza-Pizza (sporting the old logos), and the Heritage Theatre (formerly the old Vaughan Road Theatre, built in 1947 and demolished in the 80's).

A subway for the suburbs: between the lanes of the Allen Road, a six-pack of TTC H1 subway cars lead by 5362 head southbound on the new Spadina subway line (in its first year of operation at the time), about to duck into Glencairn subway station. The houses on the left are off Glen Park Avenue (once a through street, but truncated when expropriation and demolition happened in the 60's for the expressway), and the bridge in the background is Glengrove Avenue ("Glens" abound). The checkered water tower in the distance sits on top of the Simpsons distribution warehouse, later to be redeveloped into Lawrence Square Plaza.

CP SD40-2 units 672 and 673 sit in Aberdeen Yard between duties, still wearing their previous owner's colours and roadnumbers. CP 6407 (an ex-SOO SD40A) sits in the background in full "System" paint, partially hidden by NSC container flats in the foreground.<br><br>CP's motive power expansion policy in the early 90's seemed to be leasing, or acquiring secondhand power, and the reliable SD40 was their building block of choice. A few groups of secondhand units were leased and/or picked up from the likes of QNS&L, GATX, NRE, Helm, and rebuilder MK Rail. CP scooped up seven former KCS SD40-2 units, 670-676, via Helm in 1992, which were quickly patched and operated with their old numbers until eventual renumbering and repainting as <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=19619><b>CP 5415-5421</b></a>. Two units, 671 and 672, were never repainted and wore KCS white patched with new numbers <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=34680><b>5416</b></a> and 5417 until retirement.<br><br>Of the two units here, 672 (5417), and 673 (5418) were sold to <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=32779><b>NRE</b></a>, and 5417 was eventually resold to Ontario Northland (apparently as an engine test-bed unit, but it was found to be in operable condition and was put into service as <a href=http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=46574<b>ONT 1740</b></a>...still in its KCS white of course!).<br><br><i>Bill McArthur photo, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.</i>

Crossing the old Michigan Central/CASO bridge high over the Niagara River, Conrail GE's 2865, 2763 and 1910 lead train "BUCP" (Buffalo-CP Toronto) from the US into Canada on the Conrail Canada Division. This location was once known as "Suspension Bridge" in old Penn Central timetables.<br><br>As most on here know, CN and CP bought the old ex-PC/NYC/MCRR CASO line from Conrail in the mid-80's (becoming parts of the CP Hamilton Sub and CN CASO Sub), and it experienced a slow decline in the following years. The line through the nearby Clifton Hill area of Niagara Falls (and the bridge here) were abandoned by CP in 2001. While the track was taken up, the bridge still remains - blocked off and unused due to being too costly to demolish.<br><br><i>Reg Button photo, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.</i>
