CP B523 is viewed heading east through Bayview Junction after departing Aberdeen Yard in Hamilton for Toronto. The train was powered by GP9u 8234, HATX GP40-2 505 and CP C-424 4212. Leased HATX 505 was originally built in December 1977 as Boston & Maine Railroad 305.

During a slightly overcast spring morning, VIA Rail train 92 powered by 6428 passes a CN job switching Stuart Street Yard in Hamilton on the Grimsby Subdivision. CN 1355 and 7101 were sorting newly built DTTX container cars manufactured at the nearby National Steel Car facility.

Spring has sprung as CN GP9RM 4132 leads the 15:30 Kitchener Job through downtown Waterloo, Ontario on the Waterloo Spur as the crew prepares to protect Regina Street. The job has three hoppers for Nutrite in Elmira.

In 1993, Burlington Northern had placed a record setting 350-unit order with GMDD in London, Ontario for 4,000 horsepower SD70MAC’s totalling $675 million. In December 1993, the first one, BN 9400 rolled-off the assembly line at the London plant with 349 more to follow over the course of the next couple years. Painted in the BN “Executive Scheme” the units departed London for delivery to BN in Chicago via both CN and Canadian Pacific. Here BN 9429 and 9430 are viewed at CN’s yard in London waiting to be lifted after having made the short trip from the GMDD plant.

Leased GATX GP40G 3080 and Cape Breton & Central Nova Scotia Railway (CBNS) C630M 2035 are viewed ready to depart for their return trip to Goderich at Stratford, Ontario on February 6, 1994. The winter of 1993-1994 was a brutal one for GEXR’s fleet of second-hand GP9’s and by early February, most were either out of service or severely ailing, which forced RailTex to lease power or transfer from their other operations.

During an April afternoon, stored GO Transit GP40-M-2 721 is viewed at the Mimico, Ontario maintenance facility. The unit began life as Chicago Rock Island & Pacific after being built by EMDD in January 1967. It was sold to GO in 1982 along with a group of other ex-CRI&P units. The GP40-M-2’s worked on the commuter agency for over the next decade until new GO F59PH’s eventually put them into storage and they were retired. On May 22, 1994, GO Transit 720-724 departed Toronto via CN for the VMV facility in Paducah, Kentucky where they would be rebuilt to EMD Leasing units. Sister GO units 725 and 726 were previously shipped to VMV in 1993 and had become EMD 200 and 201.

A CN bulkhead flatcar loaded with brand new Champion road graders is seen at the CN yard in Stratford, Ontario on February 6, 1994. Presumably, it will eventually be lifted by either CN 421 or 422 to continue its journey. The new equipment was brought down from Goderich via the Goderich-Exeter Railway after being lifted from the Champion Road Machinery plant in the town. In 1997 Volvo had paid $173-million to take over Champion Road Machinery. However, in 2008 it was announced they were going to close the road grader plant by 2010, eliminating 500 jobs, and consolidating its road machinery operations in Pennsylvania. At the time, Volvo had said this move was made to improve competitiveness and profitability while reducing exchange rate fluctuations as our Canadian dollar had risen incredibly high.

CN L566 pauses to cross Erb and Caroline Streets in downtown Waterloo, Ontario with GP38-2 4730 and GP9RM 4138. Once across the intersection, the local would continue its journey on the Waterloo Spur to Elmira with just light power.

A CP westbound with SD40-2 6043, SOO Line SD40-2 6606 and Helm Leasing SD40 6100 waits for a new crew to head west from London, Ontario's Quebec Street Yard to Windsor. Helm SD40 6100 is former Burlington Northern SD40 6305 and it was released from the AMF facility in Montreal, Quebec a couple weeks earlier on February 15 and was destined for Chicago, Illinois. Reportedly, this unit was previously leased to CP. <br> Also noted in the train were several passenger/baggage cars. Unfortunately, I don’t have any information on what they were or their destination.

Cape Breton & Central Nova Scotia Railway (CBNS) C630M 2035 and leased GATX GP40G 3080 bring a heavy Goderich-Exeter Railway (GEXR) train into Stratford, Ontario on February 6, 1994. The winter of 1993-1994 was a brutal one for GEXR’s fleet of second-hand GP9’s and by early February, most were either out of service or severely ailing. Cold winter weather and daily battles with squalls coming-off Lake Huron had proven too much for the veteran GP9’s, so RailTex turned to sister railway CBNS for help. The east coast shortline sent big MLW 2035 which operated between Stratford and Goderich for a couple weeks to help alleviate GEXR through their motive power crunch. In the end, 2035 would fare no better and would eventually be sent back east dead and in need of required repairs.

1994 was such an awesome year for railfanning. As my world of train photography widened from Kitchener and my hometown Waterloo Spur, I soon saw that there was so much going on with both CN and CP motive power rosters. As well, each railway was attempting to change their corporate images and were quickly repainting units in new schemes as fast as their paint shops would allow. As the history books would note, both the CNNA scheme and CP Rail duel flags scheme would dissipate without any fanfare and the railway’s would later eventually try to go back to their roots to salvage cooperate images. However that was all bigger picture stuff. As my notes indicated 30 years later, there was no better place to start my memories of 1994 than at Kentucky Fried Chicken, no abbreviations, as that’s actually what it was called at that time. <br> Andy Gertz’s scanner crackled to life as we were waiting for our lunch inside the restaurant. CN 5100 east was coming towards London on the Strathroy Subdivision from Komoka. With several very fresh two and three piece combos now in hand, my dad drove us towards the CN yard as it was learned that this eastbound was going to lift two units at London East. Pictured here, CN SD40 5100 and SD40u 6002 are at London East with CN GP9RM’s 4135 and 7037 in the background. <br> According to my notes, both GP9RM’s had recently returned on a local job from St. Thomas. CN 6002 was rebuilt from SD40 5118 the year prior by AMF in Point Ste. Charles, Quebec and was freshly adorned in the CNNA paint scheme.
