During a spring evening after completing their work, CN 421’s crew had to wait for the 15:30 Kitchener Job to return to the yard with their lift of newly built automotive frames from the Budd plant in Kitchener. Knowing they had some ample time to wait, they departed the yard light power down the siding towards King Street for some dinner options. The units included; CN GP40-2L(W) 9505, C-630M 2038 and an SD40-2(W). The power crossed King Street and stopped behind the plaza, that featured a Tim Hortons, Subway and a McDonalds across the street. At the time the siding extended even further west towards Park Street, however this portion was rarely used as most trains exited it at King Street through the cross-overs.

So pictured here is 421’s power in the siding with the iconic Epton factory and its water tower in the background. Also, several other factories can be observed, showing-off Kitchener’s once vibrant industrial past. To the right of 9505 is the Guelph Subdivision mainline with another small siding track and the very far track is the Huron Park Spur. Today this is the location of the GO Transit layover facility and the plaza where the crew went that night is completely gone.

During a slightly overcast spring morning, a CN job is viewed switching Stuart Street Yard in Hamilton, Ontario on the Grimsby Subdivision. CN 1355 and 7101 were sorting newly built DTTX container cars manufactured at the nearby National Steel Car facility.

CN GP9RM 4132 leads the 15:30 Kitchener Job through Waterloo Park approaching Seagram Drive in Waterloo, Ontario. The job has one tank car for Sulco in Elmira on the Waterloo Spur.

CN GP38-2 7501 is viewed from Toronto’s (Vaughan) MacMillan Yard diesel shop tower awaiting its next call to the hump as another 7500-series set can be seen in the background working the actual hump. To the left is newly built Orinoco Mining SD38-2TC 1048, which was on route from the GMDD plant in London to the AMF facility in Montreal, Quebec for contract painting. This was a mining railroad in Venezuela, that had eight units manufactured and painted in Canada, which were loaded on a ship in Halifax during June of that year to reach their destination.

So the story goes, checking my notes, this photo was taken during a MacMillan Yard visit thirty years ago on Mother’s Day 1994. With that in mind, I wish a Happy Mother’s Day to every mom out there both here and now gone.

VIA Rail #84 with P42 918 patiently waits as passengers load at the Kitchener, Ontario station as CN L568 with 4732 and 4130 slowly heads west down the siding light power. Soon 84 will continue its journey eastbound to Toronto over the Guelph Subdivision and L568 will head west to Stratford and likely St. Marys.

During a spring morning, CP GP9u 8209, RS18u 1831 and another RS18u and GP9u are viewed leading a train onto the CN Oakville Subdivision at Hamilton Junction after having departed CP Aberdeen yard in Hamilton, Ontario. The train will continue eastbound to Toronto over the Oakville Subdivision before reaching CP trackage again at Canpa.

Leased VIA Rail F40PH-2’s 6458 and 6454 have rolled-off the shop tracks at CP’s Toronto yard diesel facility. The pair are heading to the east end of the yard where they are likely heading for a waiting train destined for the Belleville Subdivision or possibly a transfer run. During 1994-1995 CP had leased several VIA Rail units to assist them through their severe motive power shortage until the new GE's that were on order started arriving.

Leased GATX GP40G 3080 and Cape Breton & Central Nova Scotia Railway (CBNS) C630M 2035 are viewed ready to depart for their return trip to Goderich at Stratford, Ontario on February 6, 1994. The winter of 1993-1994 was a brutal one for GEXR’s fleet of second-hand GP9’s and by early February, most were either out of service or severely ailing, which forced RailTex to lease power or transfer from their other operations.

So the story goes, for reasons unknown on this day several trains detoured via the CN Guelph Subdivision from their regular Dundas Subdivision routing. My notes indicate that both CN Laser trains 238 and 239 were routed through Kitchener, but they were sent across the line while I was still in school. However, CN 411 was still coming. My friend picked me up once I had gotten home from school and we made a beeline for the station. As we got to Ahrens Street, the crossing became activated and we had no choice but to photograph it on “the wrong side” going by the station.

Here CN 5280, 5098 and a GP40-2L(W) bring a detour 411 by the Kitchener station as it heads west to London over the Guelph Subdivision. If only we had one more minute to get across to the platform that day, but three decades later I’ll take solace in the fact it was at least nose lit.

During a spring morning, CN SW1200RS 1374 is viewed waiting for its next assignment at CN’s Stuart Street yard’s small shop in Hamilton, Ontario. The unit was repainted in the CNNA scheme the year prior. It was eventually retired on April 6, 1999, and would later become CN CS-03.

CP B523 is viewed heading east through Bayview Junction after departing Aberdeen Yard in Hamilton for Toronto. The train was powered by GP9u 8234, HATX GP40-2 505 and CP C-424 4212. Leased HATX 505 was originally built in December 1977 as Boston & Maine Railroad 305.

Spring has sprung as CN GP9RM 4132 leads the 15:30 Kitchener Job through downtown Waterloo, Ontario on the Waterloo Spur as the crew prepares to protect Regina Street. The job has three hoppers for Nutrite in Elmira.

In 1993, Burlington Northern had placed a record setting 350-unit order with GMDD in London, Ontario for 4,000 horsepower SD70MAC’s totalling $675 million. In December 1993, the first one, BN 9400 rolled-off the assembly line at the London plant with 349 more to follow over the course of the next couple years. Painted in the BN “Executive Scheme” the units departed London for delivery to BN in Chicago via both CN and Canadian Pacific. Here BN 9429 and 9430 are viewed at CN’s yard in London waiting to be lifted after having made the short trip from the GMDD plant.
