CP AC4400CW 8608 leads a westbound towards London with a mix of SD40-2’s and other GE’s through Thamesford, Ontario on the Galt Subdivision.

During spring 2008, Canadian Pacific sent several of their MP15AC’s and MP15DC’s to have modifications performed at Ontario Southland Railway’s (OSR) Salford, Ontario shop. These upgrades were performed by ZTR, which is a supplier and installer, if required, of parts for locomotive enhancement. At the time, ZTR was contracted by Canadian Pacific to equip units 1440–1447 with the Smart-Start system and also a form of adhesion enhancing equipment. The work was performed in the Salford facility by ZTR with testing following by OSR on their trains at the time. Canadian Pacific interchanged the units with OSR at Woodstock. MP15DC 1442 is seen along with several other OSR units outside the Salford shop on a sunny spring afternoon shortly after arriving from Canadian Pacific.

Ten years before the addition of the ION network, Goderich-Exeter Railway (GEXR) train X580 with LLPX GP38-2 2236 is seen paused near the University Avenue crossing with no crew in sight. The crew had stopped the train and went into the nearby plaza for lunch, briefly putting a chase to Elmira on hold. The Saturday extra was destined for Elmira where it would service the chemical facilities, before returning to Kitchener later in the day.

11 years before being repainted into Ontario Southland Railway colors, RaiLink FP9u 1401 sits at the Goderich-Exeter Railway shop in Goderich, Ontario with stored CEFX GP38-3 6537 and GEXR GP38 3856, which was undergoing routine maintenance.

During June 2015, a friend and I ventured to the small eastern Ontario town of Cardinal. Here, Ingredion Canada operates a 1.5 mile industrial spur that connects its former Canada Starch Company (CASCO) facility to the CN Kingston Subdivision at mile 104.8. The Ingredion Canada railway crews make several daily runs between their small interchange with CN beside the Kingston Subdivision and the large plant. The spur offers some neat views as it meanders through Cardinal, crossing several streets and even running closely beside some businesses and houses. In the town, near the water tower and just north of Highway #2, Ingredion Canada has a three-track support yard where it stores cars. This yard is located between the interchange with CN and the Ingredion Canada facility. Helm Financial Corporation (HLCX) ex-Canadian Pacific MP15AC 1445 and ex-CN GMD-1 1105 are seen slowly rolling through Cardinal as they bring three tank cars to the Ingredion Canada plant.

On a sunny spring day in April 1996, several onlookers gather to watch as CN GP9RM’s 4115 and 4140 slowly haul a lengthy rail train through Palmerston, Ontario, literally taking more than 100 years of railway history with it. On this day, the CN rail train would remove several sections of the once thriving Newton Subdivision as it made its way towards Stratford one town at a time. During that month, CN removed the rails that linked Harriston with the festival city of Stratford and never looked back, creating another void in the Ontario railway landscape and securing the Newton Subdivision’s future in the history books. Goderich-Exeter Railway (GEXR) GP9 177, departs the large Sifto Salt mine in Goderich, Ontario with three hoppers and heads up the steep grade towards the yard on April 28, 1995. The former Cartier Railway unit would operate on GEXR until 2002, after a damaged main generator sidelined it for good.

An aging former CN “Derail” marker still protects the dormant section of the Galt Industrial Spur in Cambridge, Ontario. As Goderich-Exeter Railway operations cease to exist in Cambridge this November, this section of trackage will once again revert back to CN, even though it is unlikely a CN train will ever roll by this derail sign again.

Goderich-Exeter Railway (GEXR) train 581 with HLCX SD40M-3’s 6061 and 6522 is seen idling beside GEXR GP9 4001 at Clinton, Ontario on the railway’s Goderich Subdivision. The pair of SD40M-3’s has just set-off 4001, as it will be assigned to an upcoming job operating on the former CN Exeter Subdivision. Soon, 581 will continue its journey to Stratford with tonnage lifted at Goderich and the units will then have little rest, being assigned to train 432 later in the afternoon and heading to Toronto.

RLK GP35 2211 (painted for RailAmerica) and LLPX GP38AC 2210 are seen assigned to Goderich-Exeter Railway train X580 in Elmira, Ontario as they switch the chemical companies on the Waterloo Spur. It was reported recently that RLK GP35 2211 was scrapped in Goderich, Ontario during August by G&W. The unit was originally Canadian Pacific 5010, nee- Canadian Pacific 8210.
