Emerging from the trees and shadows, Goderich-Exeter Railway (GEXR) train 584, is illuminated by the very last light of a fading summer day as it crosses William Street in Waterloo heading for Elmira on the Waterloo Spur. Powering the train are GEXR 2303 and GEXR 2073.

CN train 101 with 8024, 2318 and 8912 are northbound on the DRZ (Directional Running Zone) as they roll under historic Tower Hill and onto the 1695-foot Canadian Pacific trestle over the Seguin River and the busy Parry Sound harbour.

CN train 112 heads southbound through Boyne, just outside of Parry Sound, Ontario on the Bala Subdivision. Powering the train are CN 2811, CN 3118 and CEFX 6002, which is former SOO Line SD60 6002.

At the start of 2018, if someone had said that I would have the chance to photograph an active CP SD40-2 again I would have had my doubts. Well, flash forward to summer and having just arrived in Parry Sound on a family vacation, putting aside some time to witness one of these iconic GMD's leading a northbound was an easy decision. CP 6062 and 3042 are viewed leading an empty northbound Herzog ballast train, destined for Sudbury, under historic Tower Hill and onto the 1695 foot CP trestle bridge over the Seguin River and the Parry Sound harbour. Thank you to Stephen C Host for the heads-up and the information on this train that day.

CN train 435 utilizes the mainline crossovers on the Dundas Subdivision at Hardy in the city of Brantford on a steamy summer afternoon. The consist included; 2566, BCOL 4614 and 5448 with work ahead in Paris.

The scene at Clinton after Goderich-Exeter Railway (GEXR) train 581 set-off GP9 4001 before continuing their trek from Goderich to Stratford on the Goderich Subdivision. In the near future, the unit will be used to service the railway's Exeter Spur, which at the time served customers between Clinton and Centralia.

Goderich-Exeter Railway (GEXR) train 581 with HLCX SD40M-3’s 6061 and 6522 are seen lifting GEXR GP9 4001 at the railway's shop in Goderich, as the shortline's storage line of four-axle unit's lengthens with the introduction of higher horsepower units on the property.

It's not Donner Pass, however 3054 still sounded good as it hauled Goderich-Exeter Railway train 431 up the Niagara Escarpment approaching the Hamlet of Limehouse heading west to Stratford.

CN GP9RM 4111 leads the 15:30 Kitchener local down the Huron Park Spur in Kitchener less than a month before the original of takeover of the Goderich-Exeter Railway in November 1998. In the last two decades this area has changed dramatically with the installation of the GO Transit layover facility and the CTC installation on the Guelph Subdivision. Engineer Dennis Fleet looks back at his train as the crew of the 15:30 Kitchener Job attempts to work ahead and depart Elmira, Ontario on September 11, 1996. The crew is finishing switching at Sulco Chemicals before an approaching super cell descends on the area. CN GP9RM 4124 would soon throttle-up and haul its sizeable train back to Kitchener along the Waterloo Spur eventually being overtaken by the fast moving storm.

There are limited places in Southern Ontario where mainlines parallel busy roadways for several miles, however Highway 7 between Acton and Guelph is not one of them. The Guelph Subdivision runs beside the highway for many kilometers and has some interesting views. However, currently with only a limited amount of CN daylight freight movements in this section, GO and VIA Rail trains are now the main players.

Looking back on my notes the last Goderich-Exeter Railway (GEXR) 584 I had photographed crossing King Street in Waterloo was on July 31, 2008. At that time, Uptown Waterloo still resembled what I had grown-up with and still had that familiar feel as the former CN Waterloo Spur cut through the Town Square mall parking lot guarded only by a couple small crossings with wooden cross-bucks that the conductor had to protect as the train made it's way north to Elmira.

Almost ten years later and the entire landscape of Uptown Waterloo is almost unrecognizable in some areas with the installation of the ION Light Rail network, the modernization of the mall and the newly overhauled street-scape efforts as well. However, despite all the changes, GEXR 584 still continued its Monday-Thursday evening runs to Elmira, now with an order time from Kitchener at 18:30 that only allowed daylight photography within a short window of time during the longer summer months on the Waterloo Spur.

On June 13, 2018 just as the sun was setting on a cloudless evening, a young family has a front row view at GEXR train 584, crosses King Street with GEXR 2073 and GEXR 2303, hauling three tank cars for Elmira.

After meeting VIA Rail train 85, pictured in the background at the Kitchener station, Goderich-Exeter Railway (GEXR) train 516 is viewed in the siding slowly approaching the yard, where it will set-off and lift cars before returning westbound to Stratford. The consist includes; GEXR GP38-3 2073, SLA RM-1 806 and SLA GP40-3 3806.

The calendar might say spring; however CN L568 is rolling through a winter wonderland on the Huron Park Spur in Kitchener as it approaches Victoria Street. The train, powered by GMTX 2289, 7080 and 9675 had set-off cars at the interchange with Canadian Pacific in Kitchener as well as spotted one boxcar at Convoy Supply Limited. After returning on the spur light power to the Guelph Subdivision, the units would head westbound to Stratford. March 31, 2019.
