About 1957-1958, I was at the Brighton station one Sunday morning before church & father was there as his custom to “railfan” before tern was coined.
That Sunday morning, the “Pool Train” was on the south rail, while the C. P. R. was on the north rail….because of some trouble at Smith’s Falls-Perth.
By chance an “oil-Royal” was on the head having somehow come east.
This was _+T H E+_ only drag-race between two Hudsons… CN’s long-legged 5700 and
the “oil-Royal”.
Gamely, the “oil-Royal” was keeping pace with the CNR.
Father and the station-agent gauged their speed to be about 100-mph.
But, the race would soon be over, as there were “cross-over rails” at Cobourg.
Something I will never forget.
