  1. This was the time when the Galt & Windsor Subs had existing ballast replaced with slag that was “imported” from the nickel operations in Sudbury. This work program created all kinds of work for train crews. We often had dedicated slag trains and sometimes slag empties. The cars needed to make quick turnarounds to keep feeding the work gangs as they proceeded along with the work. Delays created by all day work blocks at the work area, resulted in many long trips and some re-crews. I was a brakeman in the East Pool at that time ( with the odd trip pulled from my crew to be Conductor on another train) and one pay period of two weeks every trip in both directions was 11 hours long or more with only one hour’s sleep in Toronto. It was tiring, but very lucrative. I was young & had a young family to support, so the “big money” was most welcome.
