A lot has changed since I took my last photo here. GO trains on the Barrie Line now stop at Downsview Park, with a direct connection to the recently opened TTC Spadina Subway extension. Weekend trips, and off peak trips in both directions now run also.

That made this shot possible. Even better, many of the off peak trains are L6's, typically designated to GO's F59PH's. The Transsee server now allows for tracking of GO Transit locomotives. So the remaining eight on the roster can be tracked, and endlessly stalked by foamers until their retirement. The AC Tier 4 MP40's seem sluggish in their delivery process, so perhaps there are still a couple years left in the F59PH's.

In this shot, GO 558 leads train 808 southbound, having originated at Aurora. It just met northbound train 791 around Snider, which had 557 pushing for power. Yes, the train numbers have been completely shuffled around. With Downsview Park station just a little north, GO trains no longer rip through here at 75mph. Not as entertaining, though that made this shot easier, as the high sun was reeking havoc on my lens.

I'd imagine at some point in the next few years, this section will be double tracked. PNR was quite busy in the area on this day. Further changes recently have included more development of the former Downsview airport hangers for extra-carricular activites (sports, etc...). This area has changed plenty in the last decade besides the GO trains, and many more changes are to come. Speaking of which, a couple of construction workers photo bombed my shot, and can be seen just above the front of the F59PH on the right.

  1. Very nice shot Daniel. I was actually working there at Downsview at Carl Hall Rd.

  2. At least it’s better than the bus. On my trips on that line it was always F59′s. Nary an MP40PH to be used.

The bus was fun due to numerous detours, specifically going down Don Mills Rd. I’d get the driver to let me off at Don Mills and Overlea (or as close to it as possible) because I don’t live too far from there and double backing seemed ridiculous.

Can’t say I miss the bus. lol.

  3. Off-peak trains are nice. I used to take the GO King City Express (Rt.63) from Vaughan to/from Toronto during off-peak periods when the Barrie line was rush-hour only. The afternoons weren’t too bad, but I avoided any bus departing Toronto from about 2:30pm to 7pm due to the traffic it would run in, especially taking the DVP and/or Gardiner. There was one bus ride I boarded at Union at 3:30, crawled up the DVP/404 in heavy traffic, and didn’t get off at Rutherford GO till 4:55 or so (I would have been better off waiting for the 4:10 train that arrived at 4:40pm!). Now the hourly afternoon and evening trains have replaced all of that.
