505 was one of eight specially-built GMD GP40TC (Toronto Commuter) locomotives constructed in 1966 for the Government of Ontario's new commuter service, but at this point in 1988 they were all on borrowed time. With new GMD F59PH units rolling off the assembly line in London, GO 505 and her siblings had already been put up for sale earlier that year in May, and would depart for Amtrak in October, hastily renumbered into their new numbers 192-199.
