A taste of home in a far away land...

After spending 4 days marveling at the efficiency of CP RTC and trains in the Kootenay Valley (especially the Windermere sub), CP had to give us a reality check and a reminder that they are still incompetent, even in BC. The reminder this day was CP 416, which was tasked to work a small block-swapping yard along the Cranbrook sub called Tochty. They arrived at Tochty around 07h00 local time and by 10h00, when 7016W 419 arrived, they were still working the yard. So 419 waited. And waited. And waited. Eventually, CP realized 416 wasn't going to make it to Fort Steele in their 10, so they pulled a crew off a waiting grain empty and gave them 416. Finally just after 1pm, 416 finished the last of their yard work and shoved down the main to clear up the yard for 419 to pull in. Once 419 had the yard to themselves, it was a quick 5 car set off (no more than 30 minutes) and blast off for the border at Kingsgate and UP interchange. At Ryan, they are about 3 miles south of Tochty as they pull around the bend beside Hwy 95. The antics weren't over yet however. Once they passed us, they had to meet the tied down grain train which took the main at Yahk and cut a crossing so that foreman could access their equipment between train. Once 419 went around the grainer, the crossing stayed activated because the grain train was still on the crossing circuit, and there was nothing anyone could do until the grain train got a recrew about 4 hours later. Whoops!
