  1. This is an interesting shot John. I’m wondering if the date might be a few months off? I ask that because this power was typical of the startup of C&O trains 937 and 942. Sets of 3 were dedicated to this service. Three unit sets of C&O power worked alternating with CP power. I recall those trains starting later in 1973, or perhaps even into 1974.
On the Windsor Sub, those trains originally ran into the newly constructed Powell sidings west of Walkerville Jct & Walker Road. The trains came through the tunnel with C&O crews who run them to Pelton Jct and then southward on the C&O and then westward into one of the Powell sidings. Those sidings were built one on either side of the Windsor Sub main track. The CP & C&O crews would switch power & vans if I recall. The GP38ACs were always in a set of 3 at first. These were soon replaced with C424s & other 4 axle units.
Powell sidings were short lived owing to legal issues that I won’t go into. The dual control switches were removed and the rails followed later. Thereafter, those trains ran into CP’s Windsor Yard and were run east from there.
My memory on details might be a bit fuzzy, I was working the spareboard and only went to Windsor infrequently. so any corrections or additional would be appreciated.

  2. I should add, C&O vans were not used on the CP probably because they didn’t meet the union’s Collective Agreement stipulations. Power may or may not have changed at Powell, but CP vans were always run east on CP.
