An 8-pack of the TTC's 1950's Gloucester G-series subway cars (the original Red Rocket subway cars built overseas in the UK for the Yonge line) head northbound past maintenance workers on the new Spadina subway line extension, ducking under Ridelle Avenue between Eglinton West and Glencairn subway stations. To achieve the full consist length, the shorter G-series cars were coupled up into trains of eight cars, versus trains of six of the regular 75' aluminum Hawker Subway cars.

While the new subway extension from St. George to Wilson opened in January 1978, work was still progressing on the nearby Allen Road (aka the failed Spadina Expressway). One idea that did survive all the grassroots and political fighting around the expressway construction was the idea of building a rapid transit line up the center of it, today reaching as far north as the City of Vaughan.

One idea that did survive all the grassroots protesting and political fighting around the expressway construction was the idea of building a rapid transit line up the center of it, perfectly depicted here, and today reaching as far north as the City of Vaughan.
