Beauty and the Beast! The beautiful mountains of Golden, BC loom over the Beast which is CP 414503, an Industrial Brownhoist 250 ton wrecking crane. It looked terrible when it arrived in Golden from the east, but Ed and the crew went over it with their fine-toothed comb, made the necessary repairs, detailed it and then gave it the fabulous paint job as seen in this photo. Unfortunately, this and most other big wrecking cranes don't see much service these days due to the quicker response and cleanup times of contract services.

  1. Please excuse my error in the photo caption. This is actually an Industrial Brownhoist 250 ton wrecker and not a Bucyrus-Erie crane. I was preparing several photos for uploading and did a ‘cut & paste” of some info instead of typing and proof-reading as I should have. P.

  2. My good friend Ed, one of the former operators of this crane was kind enough to notify of the needed correction. Thanks Ed! P.

  3. CP 414503 is an I.B. American Z-250, sn L3745 shipped new to CP in January 1968. It is a 250 capacity unit and was originally equipped with a Caterpillar D343A diesel engine producing 289 horsepower @ 2000 rpm. It had mechanical traction equipment, 35′ main boom, 41′ auxiliary, ABG brakes, and a 3.5 mph self-propelled travel speed.
