CLC built six of these CPA-16-5 passenger locos for CN along with six CPB-16-5 "B" units. They were 1600hp and geared for 83 mph. Due to the low number on the roster, it was not too common to find one leading on a passenger train. CN 6702 on train 146 has passed through the interlocking at Hamilton West (now called Bayview) and will head onto the Oakville Sub toward Toronto. Note the wheel stops for the siding which no longer exists.

  1. That CLC must have been close to the end of its short life?

  2. Great image of a rare locomotive. My Canadian Trackside Guide indicates CPA16-5 CN 6700-6705 built 1954-55, retired between 1967 and 1969. So yes, nearing end of service.

  3. Those were the days

  4. I don’t believe they were all that reliable either which would contribute to a short life. The H16-44′s suffered a short life also with electrical problem if I recall correctly. CP’s H16-44′s were more reliable as they had a different manufacturer for the electrical system.

  5. All FM power suffered from electrical issue. What was worse involve tearing down the prime movers. Still, if you’re not running steam, it might as well be FM C-Liners.

  6. Lotta great shots you’re uploading Dave!

According to Dean & Hanna’s CP bible, the CP H-liners had the GE electrical system (that they preferred), while CP’s C-liner units ordered earlier had Westinghouse electricals. No mention of what CN’s units had.

  7. I think CN had Westinghouse electrics which were not as reliable as the GE.
