CN 478 is just about ready to leave Fort Nelson BC on a cold but clear November morning, bound for Fort St John BC. Fort Nelson is the most northerly station on the former BC Rail portion of CN sitting at mile 978.8 (978.8 miles north of North Vancouver). I recommend expanding the map below just to get a sense of how far north it really is. The main commodity being transported in this photo and in more recent years is refined fuels (diesel, gasoline, etc) to be offloaded in Fort Nelson and trucked to communities further north. Frac sand and and steel pipe have been on again/ off again revenues in recent years as well. The head end three sulphur cars are the only loads on this 478. In late 2017 the industry producing the sulphur pellets ceased such operations in Fort Nelson.
