CN 8804 left Port Robinson with a cut of cars destined for Southern Yard. Unable to take a picture, we headed to Southern Yard to find him switching. After setting cars off, local 562 lifted some cars and headed toward Fort Erie and is seen here at the northern switch of the wye at CN Yager.

  1. Is that Southern Yard between where you took the shot and Ridge Road?

  2. Yes, that is correct. Just a small yard where CP interchanges with CN. Also, I believe, Martech Industrial on Rusholme Rd run into Southern Yard with a small industrial switching loco.

  3. Thanks! Still don’t know much about what goes on in the Niagara Region.

  4. How does CP internchange with CN at Southern Yard? Their track is not even connected

  5. To interchange with CN at Southern Yard, CP would pass Brookfield and head toward CN Robbins, take the west leg of the wye at Robbins, travel west on the Stamford Sub through Yager to Southern Yard. It is a bit of a convoluted move but I witnessed this a few years ago.

  6. I’m surprised they still interchange there. Maybe it’s not interchange to CN but it’s traffic for Martech’s operations on the former CASO since that’s likely still CP owned. I know though many of those pipe loads do travel on CN..

  7. Good point Steve. CN562 brought cars from Port Rob that appeared to be heading for Martech. Would not be surprised that CP drops cars for Martech there as well.

  8. Where is Martech?

  9. Old CASO branch that originates at Southern Yard and runs to a couple customers, one that makes plastic/vinyl piping. They have two switchers on-site, an ex Stelco GE and another blue/white one. Martech runs to/from southern yard with their own power.

  10. ah, looking west from the highway…the old double track distinctive MCRR rails – main that runs no where; they industries on the north side

  11. This would be train, 563 heading to Feeder Yard via the West Robbins Wye, I believe. Martech is only serviced by CN, never seen a pipe load on CP trains or in Welland Yard. CP and CN interchange daily at Southern Yard, CN interchanges cars to CP for Port Maitland at the yard as well.

  12. We heard the 8804 identity as CN562 when talking to the dispatcher to get a light out of Port Robinson.
I never though it might be heading for Feeder Yard. I stand corrected on its destination. I am not totally familiar with the operations in the Niagara Peninsula.

  13. I’ve never seen the CP job on the move but I saw their power parked in Southern a few times

  14. It is a very interesting move indeed. Saw L562 today, heading from Southern Yard to Feeder Yard, via the Hamilton Sub. Fun stuff!

  15. Following up on this, yes CN and CP definitely interchange at Southern Yard, and very regularly at that. In addition to interchanging with Trillium at Feeder, 562 drops traffic for CP in Southern Yard daily (very rarely does it not run, but there is the odd time it does not) and CP TE11 goes to Southern Yard most every weekday from Welland Yard. Most of the interchange traffic I believe is for Innophos in Port Maitland, but I’ve also seen traffic for CP customers in Niagara Falls (such as Washington Mills) and boxcars (perhaps for Smithville). You can definitely see Innophos and Washington Mills traffic on this TE11 I shot: http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=37328

563 is an older ID I believe and I have only heard it used once in present times. I believe it used to be the ID for the transfer to Feeder but now this train is exclusively called 562. I did catch one movement of a 563 – a night run down to Port Colborne (http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=37474). The other two times I have seen them run the Humberstone was in daylight as 562, after finishing the usual interchange work.

  16. Thanks for the additional information regarding this train. Nice to have the detailed description.
