CN GP35's 4000 and 4001 are coupled with GP9 4502, moving around as light power at Mimico West. The yard tower at the west end of Mimico Yard is visible in the background, located between Canpa Tower and Kipling Avenue. There was another tall yard tower in Mimico near the east end of the yard.

Both GP35's pictured were the only two units of that 2500hp model CN purchased, built by GMD in 1964 (and later renumbered 9300 & 9301). They would remain orphans as CN's subsequent 4-axle GP purchases from GMD would be the upgraded and more powerful GP40 model (4002-4017), and later on various groups of 5500-series GP38-2's and 94/95/9600-series GP40-2LW's.

  1. Awesome shot Bill. Sadly ,the towers, just like the GP35′s are long gone. Towers like this one were also at Mimico Yard. Only one tower like this survives. In Sarnia yard at the east end and its still in use.

  2. There was also one at Bathurst Street Yard, and one at Don Yard too.

  3. Yes there was one at the Don and Bathurst St. The ones at Mimico and Don were demolished not long after I hired on in 81
