CNR 4-8-4 Northern 6167 is under steam on a UCRS excursion to Picton, on August 26th 1962. This was a great trip, starting from Toronto to Belleville, then Belleville to Trenton Junction, turning south on the Picton Sub for the 30 mile trip to Picton with four run-pasts. Two GP9 units, 4459 & 4472, pulled us backwards to Trenton where we left making a high speed run back to Toronto.

Note: geotagged location not exact.

  1. Wow – wonderful image… and rods down too!

  2. Rods down.. that’s a thing? :)

  3. Stephen, “Rods Down” is a steam train thing… you’re too young to understand, lol.

  4. Please do explain :)

  5. From what I understand, it’s sort of like having all cab doors closed on a diesel loco for a roster shot – ideal/sought after position for photos.

  6. Great shot Bill. It unfortunate this locomotive will never run again. It is a truly beautiful engine.

  7. Shop her, but never retire her!
