Even in the 60's, Canadian Pacific had units on lease! CP had the option of returing some steam engines to service in 1962 as they still had some flue time left, but Norris "Buck" Crump refused (much of the steam facilities and capable labour were gone) and various diesel power from other railroads was leased instead. One such group were some Union Pacific Alco FA1's and FB1's, rumoured to have been pulled from the scrap line by UP in order to be leased to CP. They were run in southern Ontario between Cartier and Smiths Falls in all-UP consists on mainline freights due to having manual transition, often in A-B, A-B-B or sometimes in groups of 4 due to poor reliability (the old worn out units often failed on the road, much to the displeasure of crews). Here, UP FA1 1616 and FB1 1636B pass by Guelph Junction station on the Galt Sub, white extra flags waving and a whisp of that classic Alco exhaust beginning to erupt. CP leased a wide variety of units in the 60's and 70's: DMIR SD's, B&M GP7, RS3 and F7's, LS&I RS3's, RSD12's and U23C's, C&O GP30/35's, BAR GP7 and GP38's, and various F-units from CGW, B&O and the B&LE. Later leasers would include a good chunk rag-tag Precision National units as well as PGE/BCOL M630's in the 70's, some Algoma Central GP's and SD's, CN RS18's, Chessie/B&O and Conrail units in the 80's (as well as GO units on weekends) and the rag-tag "rent-a-wrecks" from GATX, MPI and Helm, SD's from QNSL and BC Rail, and VIA F40's in the 80's/90's.

  1. I can remember these awesome machines stopping at Trenton for a crew change. As a matter of fact my first time ever aboard a locomotive was one of these, thanks to a kindly hogger back then. What memories Bill!

  2. And an angle from Doug Page, similar train:
