Good to hear they will be saved and not scrapped
Great catch, it was only a few weeks ago I saw them parked along the fence at the former Martech facility.
Its my understanding that Trillium/Gio is having them rebuilt for their use.
Mike;has Trillium bought these units to use in the Niagara area.See you Thursday night at the meeting.
Nice to see these SW14′s are going to be used in service. And even better if Gio/Trillium is running them.
Not if it means they’ll replace the MLW’s. Get your photos now!
The MLW 1859 is a survivor. Its been going to the scrap line for 20 years or more, but it just hangs around. Too sturdy and reliable to get rid of. The SW14′s will be a year or two in rebuilding. Parts are available but long wait times and lots of locos ahead of them. LDS has found a real niche in the marketplace.
All three of these are now rebuilt and in service, 1506 and 4100 with GIO and 1504 leased to another LDS customer.
1504 is at VIP Rail in Sarnia with slug 514 and is all black.
The SW14′s may be in service but they’re basically new locomotives – the B-C blocks were instantly replaced (b blocks and b-c blocks are considered garbage) and they also got rewired, new MG’s as needed, air conditioning, new windows cut for better visibility, more weight added (plate steel) as needed for better traction and of course one was modified for cow/calf operation
1859 continues to toil away for now. The same copper thieves got at 108 and she’s toast – unless they spend the money to repair it (mid 5 figures) – copper prices are at an all time high, thieves know it and the replacement cables have also tripled in price.. sadly.
So it appears it’s the thieves that are killing MLW’s at this point.
1859 is the only MLW in operation in Ontario right now since Waterloo Central’s were hit by the same cable thieves. Plan is to repair at least one though over at WCR.
I hope the cops find these bastards.
