It's 07:00, the meet is complete, and, as seen from the upper level of VIA 8500 Skyline, VIA #1 has received a clear signal to depart the siding at CN Nakina, ON and continue its westbound journey. As usual at Nakina, there is no shortage of activity around the station, tool house, signal shack, and yard. Local CN track forces, S&C maintainer, Sperry Rail Services, Remcan contracting, and other MoW workers are gathered to complete a job briefing, fire up their vehicles and equipment, and begin another day of 'working on the railroad'.

  1. Nice early morning photo, lots of activity. Nice to see the backside of Signal 1317 included.

  2. Only CN would make VIA do its station stop from the siding!!!! Great photo.

  3. Great image and composition. Sun glinting off the stainless cars, classic northern Ontario station, and the signal.

  4. Thanks for the kind comments guys! Leaving Nakina siding on that nice curve to join the mainline allowed me to capture a great view of the morning’s activity with people, equipment, and infrastructure aplenty! The modern communications tower in the background is in stark contrast to the very dated passenger equipment, station, out-buildings, searchlight signal, and the mainline itself. :-)

  5. The early bird gets a great view of the Canadian, the station and the “getting-ready-to-go-work” MofW. Did any coach passengers get on or off, have to struggle across that little platform extender ? Like the way you are at search light signal level. Thanks for posting, John

  6. Hi John. Yes, several folks detrained at Nakina that morning. Only the doors at the leading coach were opened and I did not walk forward from the sleepers to step off for a quick photo.
