Lately, CN 421 and 422 have been operating at pretty consistent times, and regularly meet between St. Catharines station and around Garner Road in Niagara Falls. In which case, they rarely delay each other since that is a double track section, and I'm guessing it is planned that way by the crews and the RTC. Nonetheless, CN 421 was running later than normal, and 422 also showed up a little later than normal. That still wasn't enough to prevent a sitting meet for 422. Even with only one eastbound and westbound daily scheduled freights and 33/43 miles of the Grimsby Sub being double track, the chances are still there. Seen here, CN 421 charges into the bottom of the Jordan dip with its usual lengthy train in tow as 422 waits for it to clear the Jordan interlocking. So was 422 long? By today's standards, no, which is unusual, especially now that 330/331 are gone and the as required 523-4/562 trains have not been running much with the regular summer traffic downturn. 106 cars that is, and CN 3060 doing a one unit wonder. If I can recall the last time I saw 422 with one unit, I believe that was the summer of 2009, when it was still a medium sized train. It was clear there was a lack of autoracks and other mixed freight (besides 331's tankers) on this 422, so it must have been one of those really slow days. It does seem car counts are diminishing again though, even for summer standards, as 421 and 422 on some days (even when 523 and 524 are not running) show no improved length since 330/331 were cancelled. On a lighter note, 422 was around 180 cars the next day, so some traffic must have just gotten held up from the previous day.

  1. Ahh.. I love what you kids consider ‘rare’.

It was routine to shoot trains meeting 10 years ago on the Grimsby.

    :)

  2. Lol. A stop-and-snare meet, there’s a difference. :) With no foreign power or anything interesting going through, something has to be rare. I’ve seen plenty of meets at Jordan or Nelles Road myself, but with one eastbound and westbound shortly after sunrise now, I would tend to think on most days the RTC can keep both trains moving. 421 took too long though…
