Living/working in the Sarnia region for 20 years, I would normally carry the camera with me. When CN announced plans for a new tunnel, I kept the camera loaded for the next 3 years while the project was being completed. Hence I have over 140 images of construction progress.
There would be a grand opening for the public at large the first weekend in May1995. But one month earlier, they decided to have a 'presser' and invite VIP's to "pull the switch ". I was on my usual sidewalk perch beneath the Vidal Street overpass.
After the make-up container train with a pair of freshly cleaned Alstom SD40 upgrades, they ran the First Official revenue train, 391, seen here drifting down the newly graded approach.
Less than an hour previous, VIA number 85 had used the old tunnel for the last time and you can see that signal is now darkened and a large pile of stone has been placed on the rails.
To paraphrase, one tunnel closes, another tunnel opens.
