Designed primarily for the export market, the L&PS was the only domestic buyer of the 1310hp GMD G-12 with two units on their roster. The L4 built in 1955 and shortly after, the L5 in 1957. Both would continue in service on the CN roster after the L&PS purchase on January 1, 1966 becoming 991 and 992. Both units eventually made their way west for service on Vancouver Island in 1969 before heading east to Newfoundland around 1976 to become parts units for the GMD G8 fleet on the rock.
