Moving slowly out of Steelcon's Grantham Avenue facility, 1859 has eight new NSC coil cars on the drawbar, each having their lids constructed and installed here. In recent months, most of the trackage north of the Grimsby Sub has been lifted.

  1. History now

  2. What happened to all the customers? There seems to be lots of opportunities in that industrial park.

  3. At the time of this photo only 3 customers were shipping by rail, and Steelcon/Trenergy (pictured) was only doing the coil car lids. There was two final moves out of here via trackmobile after GIO ended service: https://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=54414

Clearwater Paper was the regular customer using the WP warehousing facility to transload product which had their operations relocated to the Thorold Bioveld facility, served by GIO as seen below.

    Thorold: https://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=55677

Kemira was the other customer, only getting a couple cars per month, ultimately losing service. GIO basically gave up the twice-weekly 30 mile round trip to consolidate everything to their other operations saving money.

  4. Ian it was about 500 cars/year for what amounted to about 15 miles each way of track and crossings to maintain. Not a money maker.

And Steelcon was barely a customer, it was only for the NSC contract, prior to that they basically had’t used rail in ages.

They essentially were down to two customers after the temporary Steelcon contract was completed.

  5. Sad to see… A lot of industries claim they want to lower their ecological footprint but doesn’t bother giving rail transport a chance, i wish they’d put their money where their mouth is.

  6. If the Ontario Government had a program to support shortline railways, we’d still have these in place…

Quebec does a great job supporting shortline railways, Ontario, almost zero.
