This is really neat.
Isn’t advertising on the side of railway freight cars prohibited by AAR rules? Also, no vertical conspicuity markings? Perhaps OCS?
Stuart, I think those were ICC (Interstate Commerce Commission) rules rather than AAR.
As those names suggest, those are American rules, and they prohibit third-party advertising on railcars.
If cars are not interchanged (which may be the case with this SSS car), or the car is specifically assigned to a particular customer, or (I don’t know the association between JJ Trucking and Stewart Southern) if this company owns the railway this is all fine.
Does SSS have any other rolling stock or is this car essentially a static billboard on unused track?
Per AAR Field Manual Rule 84, advertisements or banners are not permitted on freight cars. Such promotional material is permitted on packaging; i.e. wrapped lumber, etc. Tank cars are exempt from this rule.
