Of course, Only on the Ontario Southland Railway.. but I'd never have guessed this.... would happen in 2018. Truth is, the owner of 1556 is Don Broadbear whom is a director of the Ontario Southland Railway hence a major shareholder so it's being stored by OSR after finishing its tenure on the Waterloo Central. 1556 - a former Port Stanley Terminal Railway (and St. Thomas Central / Waterloo Central) engine is now inside the shop parked behind CP 24 the business car. The PSTR and OSR have very similar roots, where many of the leaders and employees of both railways started with the Pinafore Park Railway in St. Thomas, a long defunct narrow gauge steam road inside a public park (Equipment is now at Muskoka Heritage Place - many photos on this site posted by Wayne Shaw - Search for 'em!). OSR and the PSTR are both very successful organisations, but who knows what may be possible once the PSTR gets connected to the mainline in St. Thomas. Will it ever happen?

  1. What will become of 1556 now?

  2. Well it was in the shop in front of cp 24 in september…. so it’s in storage.

  3. 1556 was never a PSTR engine. The 70T that used to be at PSTR (L4) is in use at Babcock-Wilcox in Cambridge. The hood is still PSTR colours but the cab is black. 1556 is rumoured to be going to work at the ethanol plant in Aylmer. The connection to the mainline in St. Thomas will happen, the grant money has been in place for over a year, therefore it has to happen. CN illegally removed the track in the first place, therefore they have to put it back in. Final details are in the works as to track arrangement to tie in at St. Thomas, hopefully it’ll happen next year.

  4. Interesting. What was 1556 used on before WCR then?

Oh, I know very much what happened in St. Thomas. Forgive me if i’m a little pessimistic about it, after all it’s been 28 years and I’ve heard for almost as long as I’ve been into this hobby it will be put back.

Shortlines have come and gone since then multiple times over :) So when it does happen it’s cause for celebration.

  5. It was St. Thomas & Eastern #10, before that it was a PGE locomotive according to my research at least. Now would be a good time to be optimistic about it, last I head they were talking about where to put the switch to tie into the Cayuga at Flora Street.

  6. Thank you. I’m glad to hear, and highly optimistic :)

  7. As far as I know 1400 is next in the paint booth. Be nice to see a trio of F’s together in OSR colours.

  8. It’ll happen. :)

  9. 1556 ended up at BWXT in Cambridge (Galt). (it was there in 2009 briefly). I heard it ran as a light power move, solo, from Salford to Galt over the CPR Galt sub to get here some months ago.

The pair are reunited :) You can photograph it from the parking lot.
