there are still a couple other spurs in that area, one goes to the Owens-Illinois glass plant
Actually many people call it the Consumer Glass plant and the spur serving it was named the Consumers Glass Spur. Used to serve at least 5 factories but now it’s down to 2. But your right, I just ment that it was the last Spur in the area you will see while traveling west on the Halton. I’m sure there were more in the past, it’s just too bad ther rail service is kind of rare actually these days compared to how popular it was in the 70s and 80s.
Some people still call it Consumers Glass because it once was the Consumers Glass Brampton plant, but that’s in the past and it is now Owens Illinois.
Even if they’re not getting boxes, I’m pretty sure the two sidings around nearby Rutherford Rd. that get tank cars are part of IKO.
There’s also the Peel Village Industrial Spur to the south that still serves Canada Colours & Chemicals, and Canroof Corp.
Thank you for the info Dan. I didn’t know that the the plant was called Owen Illinois. Everyone else told me it was Consumers glass. I didn’t know that the 2 tank car sidings were part of IKO as well. I seen the Peel Village Spur in service quite a bit but a lot of my photos on that line though were backlit????.
Quick question though, do you or anyone else on here know if the Torbram Industrial Spur which branches of just before Bramalea GO still sees use? As of 2016, I remember it was down to one train a day on a Tuesday but the last couple times I went railfanning on a Tuesday I never saw it nor did I see it on the fridays when I went out. It’s been almost a year now since I seen 559 on that line and there are still a few shots I hope to get there.
One train a week my bad. Sorry bout that guys. I ment it say that the line was down to one train a week on a Tuesday.
Not sure on how often 559 does the Torbram lead, there were still a few customers but that could have changed (I think RecoChem there moved to Milton a few years back). Keep an ear on the scanner when 559′s out and about, I suppose.
Dan, another question popped into mind, was RecoChem the factory at 224 Summerlea rd near Clark Blvd? I remember seeing covered hoppers going up on 559 pretty well back in 2014-2015 and being dropped off on that particular spur but it’s been almost 3 years now since I seen hoppers going up on 559 or seeing hoppers sitting in their siding. I know for fact that the other spur crossing Summerlea rd serving Alaskan Water Seafoods has not seen a train in sometime. Anyway just a question that popped into mind.
I do know that presently at least 3 consumers remain on the Torbram Lead which are Hubberts Processing and Sales, Sutton Stormant and at the very end of the line DMX Plastics Limited although both Sutton Stormant and DMX Plastics Limited seen to be pretty infrequent shippers.
*NOTE* to a few of you who may be interested: as of right now (April 2020) it has been rather close to 2 years since L559 has gone down this particular short spur to service the Textile Rubber & Chemicals Plant. Word is that Textile has since put their property up for lease and still hoping another buisness will find interest in their location. It’ll be interesting to us railfans if the new potential company is at all interested in rail service but hey, I guess only time will tell.
Unfortunately this day in 2017 was pretty much the only time I was able to do somewhat good photography wise on this spur but who knows if I’ll get another opportunity sometime.
A bit of a fun story tho with regards to dedication in railfanning that I think a couple would get a kick from. What would some railfans take in order to catch a rare operation?
Well back in Jan 2015 when I was 14, going on 15 and just really gotten into Industrial spurs and figured out when CN worked which spurs, I was wanting to catch L559 on this spur going over the Orenda rd crossing for QUITE A WHILE but wasn’t the easiest operation to catch since General Latex (which in 2016 got re-named to Textile) was a pretty infrequent shipper.
Had a couple hit and misses and multiple days with no luck at all, and since I was likley going to have to do a little bit of summer school in the summertime (when the real schoolyear was done with us high schoolers), figured exam time was just about my best bet for the present moment in tryin to catch action here. So on the morning of Monday Jan 26 2015, I took a taxi down to this industrial lot in Brampton after my high school exam, temperature was REALLY COLD that day from what I can recall like -20, -25C. But I checked out the spur first, wanting to see if there were any signs that General Latex may be expecting CN. Then later on I walked down to the Glass Lead where I actually found 559 shunting their train around at the run-around, talked to the crew and he confirmed to me they indeed WERE going to service General Latex that day. So next thing I know I didn’t waste any time in terms of getting back to my spot as I sure as hell didn’t wanna miss it. Which I did. Waited close to 2hrs more in the frigid cold, didn’t even think to bring any long-Jon’s (silly me) but sure enough eventually 559 showed up, backing down the spur through IKOs facility, I pulled out the camera on my phone and took this video clip- to post on The Tube (since I didn’t really take a lot of pics at that time) https://youtu.be/aZ1Ku8Pgp38
How’s that for dedication huh? With this spur being at risk of falling completely dormant now, I’d say the time I spend in the cold that one afternoon was worth every minute.
