On what promises to be a nice September day, the sun rises on the westbound Super Continental being serviced in Edmonton. Alas, in a little over two months, “the Super” will no longer call here—replaced by day trains between Winnipeg-Regina-Saskatoon, Saskatoon and Edmonton, as well as the “Rupert Rocket” extended to Edmonton. The passenger station was opened by Canadian National on 14 February 1966, and the CN Tower office building officially opened on 4 November 1966—at the time, the tallest office building in Western Canada. Eighteen years after this photo was taken (on 3 September 1989), a restored Super Continental began the westbound pull-in/back-out move as CN phased out operations in downtown Edmonton. VIA would finally move to its current station near the Yellowhead Trail and Walker Yard on May 29, 1998. CN moved its office personnel out of the Tower a decade later. (Also note the heavyweight NAR passenger car next to the building.)
