Caption: Roster shot of the 9194 taken on the fly north of Egremont. The complete lineup included the 5590, 9194, 9107 and 9159. For some reason the 9194 received a unique paint job (9194 in black letters) when compared to the other re-built F unit B's. More on this can be found in Vol.20, No.1 of the CNRHA magazine CN Lines, plus there is another photo of the 9194 showing the right side and how the zebra stripes are reversed (but with 9194 in white letters). I think I figured out the mystery of this weird painting anomaly.
I have a photo from 1973 of the left side showing the stripes painted in reverse (incorrectly, pointed towards the rear). At some point, they repainted the left side correctly like you see here, with stripes pointing to the front, but they painted it just like the right side – meaning the fleet number (always at the front) now didn’t have a black stripe in the normal position to paint the white numbers on! So, they had to use black numbers on the white stripe instead.
There were variations from B-unit to B-unit as to how CN painted this new 45 degree stripe scheme, some units were even painted differently on both sides to get the offset correctly for the white numbers to always be at the front. Looks like CN was figuring it out as they went along.
