What a great photo, and very historic too! I like the TH&B logo on the fuel tank. I have fond memories of Aberdeen Yard…one such memory involves going to this exact same spot in the summer of 1985 (after getting permission) to see the locomotive that were tied up here. While walking I spotted an MLW/Alco reverser handle laying in the ballast. I knew what it was and turned it in to one of the maintenance staff at the roundhouse, who said to me, “thanks but that locomotive is long gone, looks like you got yourself a souvenir kid”. That was decades ago and I still have it. Fond memories! The staff were very friendly if you showed up on a weekend and asked permission to be there.
Years ago,CP ran a pool job out of London (Quebec Street) as needed to Aberdeen. Usually we turned back on arrival, but sometimes if a crew booked rest, we’d take the power to the shop and the two head end guys would sleep in a bunk room at the shop. The tail end guys would sleep in the van.
Three things always got my attention in the shop whenever I walked though. One was the “Sputnick” a yellow & red inspection car with steel train wheels that was parked inside. Second was an old steam engine tender that was used with the TH&B “big hook” outfit. Third, there was always a rat or two to be seen scurrying around inside the shop, especially in winter.
