While in the Niagara area yesterday I came across a sad yet interesting scene. 10 ex Canada Wheat Board hoppers lying on their sides awaiting the scrappers torch while a string of 9 more wait nearby. There is also another large cut off in the distance. These cars were built in 1979/1980 and with CN and CP taking delivery of new hoppers over the last few years these grain cars were on borrowed time. It is sad to see them go.

  1. CP’s old yard at Bassano, Alberta, is full of them.

  2. This is a fantastic image. Remarkably depressing, but an important capture.

  3. Oh yeah, I meant to say yesterday: one of my favourite parts about seeing this hoppers rolling down the tracks is when you see plants growing on them, and I am pretty sure I see some lush green on more than one. Super cool.

  4. One car has been preserved so far, ALPX 628006 “take an Alberta break, visit Edmonton” is now at the Alberta Railway Museum.

Though these cars have been a symbol of Canadian railroading for decades, I must say that I will not miss them at work. They brake very poorly compared to other cars, the handbrakes are difficult to apply and their truck-mounted air brakes are difficult to inspect and work on.

  5. Where in Welland is that?

  6. This is near Feeder Yard
