With the LRT construction at this location in Waterloo, catching a freight in daylight was an opportunity that needed to be seized. I got word of this run so I took advantage, and being that it was a clear winter day, I had some shots in mind. I am not happy with the orange fencing but it does give a snapshot of this location at this time. It was in the early stages of the LRT construction in early 2015 and this was taken right dead smack in the middle of the University of Waterloo campus, where I happened to go to university to get my B.Sc. in Earth and Environmental Science. I remember hearing this train in the evening while I was attending lectures; the reverberation made it through the walls!
Despite the clutter in the foreground, I had to get some students in my shot. So, I managed to capture a couple (presumably Chinese, but who's to say right from China or born in Canada...to be politically correct...but they look to be right from China, and out of anybody contributing on here, I should know best). The boyfriend appears to be 'saving' his girlfriend from the impending danger that lurks!!! I'm sure they weren't expecting a train. I love it!

  1. Wow Kevin now this is a really nice photo. Congrats of managing to catch this train in daylight especially at this time when LRT construction already begun! I really wish I had a chance to catch this train operating in daylight but sadly the opportunity never came. I only once unexpected saw them crossing the Ahrens/Breithaupt st in Kitchener southbound in daylight while I was waiting for VIA 85 at the now former Ahrens St crossing. Remember that day as if it was yesterday and that is how my passion for Waterloo Spur begun. The GEXR actually met VIA 85 a the switch to the Waterloo Spur that day. Before that I didn’t even know the line existed and I still remember the day Saturday Jan 3 2009 I believe. I was 8 going on 9 at the time. Overall great pic and funny fact about the couple dodging the train. If they still attend U of W, bet now they always look both ways before crossing the tracks especially with the LRT being tested and soon operating!
