The skies began to clear but the sun was going down when the second train of the infamous Mississauga Wreck detouring down the Goderich line from Guelph Jct finally made the scene. All set to shoot it from the hillside by the track when I heard a rumble behind me. A quick scamper to the CN Dundas sub side netted me this: Late afternoon CN Tempo, 2 units and steam jenny westbound approaching the bridge over the Hwy 403 as the CP 4242 and C&O 3539 did the same southbound. The power would be turned and lead the train out of Hamilton and run to Toronto via the CN Oakville sub., well after dark. Despite the gloom of the air, this is my favourite image of the "Day After".

  1. One is struck with the model railroadesque appearance of this scene. The spaghetti bowl track layout, the obviously unprototypical pairing of a CP C424 and C&O GP35, and the miraculous timing, it looks almost unreal. I suppose the Tempo shall disappear to staging under CP?

  2. Yeah, thanks for the time machine, Arnold… i’m kicking myself for not getting this one.. :)

  3. It takes a special talent to be able to kick oneself.

  4. “Hey Lockwood, can you get the switch? I need to set off this Rapido passenger car because it keeps derailing around every tight curve on the layout”

“Sure Arnold, just be sure to check the coupler height on this C&O unit, its Kadees keep uncoupling over round track”
