Looking at this image, it’s not hard to see why so many steam buffs packed it in when diesel came along.

When I was 7-8 years old in the mid 50s,I used to sit and watched them all day long as they stopped for coal and water,in 1960,the coal tower became obso and they threw it down with the water tank,sad.
Looks like maybe a little extra smoke from the second engine for the photographer! Those hoppers and gons were filled from narrow gauge trains powered by steam dinky engines.
these were the good old days when I spent many hours watching steam engines and have not spent much time watching trains since diesels arrived. I am a steam buff through and through

Great photo and an interesting variety of cars for the stone.
Beautiful! If only…. The location doesn’t look tight though. It may be crossing Hwy 46 were of Kirkfield. Though the angle is right, the crossing of that piece of road was in a light cut
