Curse that Niagara Sun!! It always seems to be in the wrong spot. Back/side-lit in this image; as usual, and I got lazy on a cool day and hung out at the plaza in Smithville so I could sit in the car and wait out #247 to see what the power was. Big mistake. Along comes CP 8621, and behind it...GCFX 3086, 3055, 3080, 3073, ALSTOM 3072 and GCFX 3102. What a flock!!!  Unfortunately it is almost impossible to catch trains once they get to speed along the Ham Sub here. The roads go this way, the tracks go that way. So, this shot was it.

  1. Seems a perfectly good shot to me, Mr.M. You are out in the “Real World” so you have to take whatever the real world offers. Any idea why all those locomotives were tied onto the CP leader?

  2. CP may have been bringing them in from the States to use on their system. I remember when CP was power short between 2008-2010. They were using lease from just about everyone.

  3. Haha! I know all too well the perils of chasing trains around here. You’re right, once they hit track speed after getting to the top at Vinemount, it’s pretty much hopeless eh? When I got the 2-246 unit grain train in Vinemount in March I tried to chase it to Smithville but it was up to track speed in no time and beat me quite easily.

    I came across this shot looking for shots of meets at Smithville. Do you by chance have any, Arnold? I witnessed a meet of 246 and 255 there on April 7 2019, but having never seen this before I wasn’t sure which train was going to be on which track, and naturally guess wronged – which prevented me from being able to get a shot of it. In hindsight, I may have been able to tell if I listened closely to which switch RTC gave 246 clearance to.

  4. Do I have ‘meet’ pics? Probably. But usually because they are just flat land shots of the tail end of one passing the other, they really aren’t much to view; and I do not mark them as such when I file them away. Actually, I try to avoid meets in Smithville because one train usually blocks out the other as they pass…both trains are in motion in order they do not foul the road crossings any longer than necessary.
    I sit west of town at Grassie to ensure I will get good views of each train.
