The Amtrak thru Southern Ontario from Windsor thru Fort Erie was really on borrowed time when this image was taken. Grubby old E units and shoddy coaches pretty well summed up this train. By early 1979 the train was re-routed up thru Niagara Falls stateside; and not long after that, well, it was history. I tried a few times to catch this thing, but it was hit and miss due to erratic schedules, as it was prone to breakdowns (2 units, 5 coaches!)on a regular basis. Lighting was tricky; this train I elected to shoot looking northward as it headed to the USA over the Niagara River Parkway after a quick station-stop at the old Flat Roofed Bridgeburg station (now gone)as there just isn't much of a good angle at this late afternoon time of day. My notes are lost, regrettably I do not have record of the second unit number. Interesting though, two paint schemes.

  1. Great pic, thanks for posting. Sadly, many Amtrak routes were discontinued in 1979 under the Carter Administration including the North Coast Hiawatha; the Champion and the Floridian. Makes me wish I could go back in time and ride Amtrak on the former CASO route from Buffalo to Windsor via St Thomas. Fortunately I was at least able to ride over the former North Coast Hiawatha route on the now-defunct Montana Daylight tour train: http://northamericabyrail.info/usa-west/the-montana-daylight/ Regards, Pete.

  2. Nice shot Mr. M.

  3. Those look like E-units. Are they?

  4. Yes, those are indeed E units. Amtrak in the beginning had a bunch (around 50) of E8s and E9s, old relics one and all. No wonder they roamed in pairs!!

  5. Went over this bridge alot in the 1970s
