Very few locomotives I like less than the SD70s on CN. The only exceptions are CN SD75s and those dirty GEs on CP. But, those SDs with the runny watercolour paint and tattered appearance actually were rather attractive when new. Here is an example; CN 5617, only 4 days old, followed by 5614, in its' 22nd day, about to enter the Grimsby Sub., westbound. The track running left in the photo is part of the wye as seen from Stanley Av. These locomotives have been around 20 years already.

  1. Beautiful brand new 5617..already 20 years.

  2. Feel old yet, Pierre? If not, come check out what is left at Fort Erie.

  3. Nice catch. You’re right, they sure do look good in fresh paint. However, I fear that these won’t be around as long as the SD70M-2s and various GEVOs will be, so shoot them while you can. Sooner or later it’s going to be as boring as CP on the CN rails. BNSF has already started to sideline most if not all of their older SD75M/SD70MAC-type units in favour of the newer GEVOs, C44-9Ws and SD70ACes.

  4. You may not like them to photograph, but hand down they are the quietest and most comfortable units to operate. Hands down way better then any varient like the SD70M-2′s or anything GE can muster. I had 5607 on 397 last night. 10,350tons and 11,098ft. Climbing Dundas Hill was awesome. SD70/75I’s..winning :-)

  5. As for your being one who is fortunate enough ? to be on both sides of the camera, I can appreciate your comment. A train of that size climbing the grade west is impressive no matter what the pullers. But for the fan, it is all about the visual. I’d love to relive those smokey belching old MLWs thru my camera lens once again, even if they bounced you right out onto the cab floor. :o ) Thanks for your note. Keep safe!!!

  6. @ awmooney, yea I am lucky to get behind the lens as well as the throttle :-) I am a fan too and do miss the days when I had FPA4′s and M630/636 and M420’2 to photograph. I have to say the old Alcos put on quite a show but were horrible to operate..lol but oh that smoke!!
That is why its wonderful that you and other are out there capturing these moments. It was not long ago that GP40-2′s ruled everything, now I would love to have a few on my train.
