On a very cold January Saturday my trusty '79 Pontiac wagon ( The Parisienne – Atlantica ) found its way to CN Snider, where to no surprise a westbound typical mixed freight with mixed power – some what unusual given GMD only – is occupying the turnout to enter the Mac Yard lead. CN 9554 ( GMD 1975 built GP40-2L(W) ) is teamed with a venerable F7Bu ( GMD 1951; rebuilt 1972 to 'u' status) and two other GP40's. The trailing SW may have been lifted at Oshawa along with the coiled steel gondolas – perhaps from Lasco Steel ( now Gerdau ). All thirty of the CN rebuilt (1972 ) F7's will be retired by 1989. What's interesting: 1985: The year of the Polar Vortex ( yes, that term is not new ! ) The final chapter of the CAR begins: April 30 - CN and CP take over the Canada Southern (Michigan Central/New York Central/Penn Central/Conrail) line(s) through southern Ontario. more York Subdivision: MLW#2035 BBD#2118 BBD#2111 and surprise, new owner: the repainted 9554 today sdfourty
