Red Barn-The Wall. So it looks, anyway. A dozen brand new SD40-2F locomotives sit at the CP Quebec St yard on a rather drab Monday afternoon. This is 12 of the 25 units built. Hard to believe they are being retired already, and sightings of what is left have been far and few between. Actually, I am not sure if any of them are out on the road anymore. In this photo we see CP 9002, 9006, 9014, 9023, 9018, 9007, 9012, 9003, 9009, 9000, 9005 and 9004. I had no problem wandering that day, but trespassing on CP property is now prohibited.

  1. Wasn’t that when they were all sent back to GM for warranty work? I recall GM had stopped making SD40-2′s by then, and this was a special order for CP; and they didn’t do so well.

  2. Dave: Not being one who ever worked for the railroads, I had forgotten about the “bugs”.
Now, I just checked CTG, and Date Built shows 11/12/1988 and I shot this in March 1989. So yes, they have been returned. And I just checked my caption against my notebook and I put down the wrong year. It shows 1988 and my notebook reads 1989. I shall get that corrected. Thanks Dave.

  3. I never made a note of it but 5 or more years ago they used one of these Barns for switching the yard here in Edmonton. It is encouraging that the CP thought the CN had a good thing going and dabbled with Draper Tapers and Comfort Cabs. Nice photo and thanks for sharing it.

  4. Miss these units ! Beauty shot !
