The Circus Train comes to town!! This is the only time I chanced getting up to track level to catch a train coming over to Canada on the (now closed) Suspension Bridge. I'm at the end just over the River Rd/Niagara Parkway portion in order to catch the long Barnum & Bailey Circus Train as it arrives. It was getting late and it was starting to rain; a dull crappy fall day.........which probably explained why only myself and friend (late) Reg Button were on hand to photograph the train as it passed us down by Chippawa a short time later. At dusk when the train stopped, the animals had to be let out, watered, etc. Too bad it was dark.

  1. That train went to Toronto over The Oakville Sub didn’t it? I think I caught a glimpse of the return trip a few days later.

  2. Sad to say I can’t remember. No doubt it did, and no doubt I was at work (oh the horror) when it returned to the US.

  3. Nice shot – wouldn’t wanna try this now. At least at Fort Erie it’s still OK.

  4. After 146 years the circus train will be no longer. The last show will be in Nassau Cty, NY on May 21st, 2017. Operators cite changing public tastes, declining attendance, higher operating costs and the animal rights activists all figuring in the decision. NO more circus trains. :o (

  5. Was this ever double tracked?

  6. I’m assuming it was, as the line was double tracked right thru from Queen St along Palmer Av and thru Clifton Hill….I remember it.

  7. @DoctaPinklaces: The circus train image showed up in my favourites bar today. Checkout this amazing AWM image posted today that shows the bridge was once double tracked. http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=47402

@AWM: This circus train image appears to show what looks like streetlights lining the south side of the bridge. Your grain train image from 3 years earlier shows they’re not there. Anyway, both images are quite something !

  8. Thank you, Aitch.
To think I remember second guessing whether I wanted to bother with the Circus shot.
Film, ya know. Cost money. :o )
