I was very fortunate this eastbound was held at the signal just below the Waterdown Rd bridge in Aldershot. It gave me a chance to grab several shots of it before the light faded. A difference of ten minutes late day makes all the difference in the world. A four unit freight of all GO power was a rarity indeed; this was my only sighting.  The power short CN was leasing whenever they could. GO 9801, 9804, 710 and 709 power this train. GO was renumbering all of their 9800s to 700 series at the time. The Kirkelder Spray Mister building is much better known as Aldershot Cold Storage by us photographers of the day. It has been now been leveled. And the main is now three tracks plus two Aldershot yard leads are in the foreground. In the far background is a structure of Cooke Concrete, another defunct business of the area. Only that low building by the lead engine, known to me as "FX" which was a theatre outfit of some sort, is still there to mark the territory.

  2. So that was a CN freight not a CP freight? I knew CP leased GO units…

  4. Now you have me thinking, Mr. Host. Perhaps someone else will chime in, but I have having a problem recalling CP trains running over the CN back in 1975/76. I can only recall one nocturnal train that ran often with PC power (and was a big deal when we saw it in daylight) and the Starlight; which then too ran with a combination of TH&B/CP or, in 1974 with mostly Penn Central. I have not been able to recall a leased GO on the Starlite or such power in either Kinnear or Aberdeen. I’m wondering why, as it is a short run. Has anyone out there ever witnessed this? All GO on CP I witnessed was on the Galt sub., although I am sure it ran north and east as well.

  5. CP leased from GO in the 90′s; 20 years after Mooney’s picture. Did they lease from GO in the 70′s too? I thought, and DO stand to be corrected. at that early time there was little weekend GO service and CN used the other locomotives for freight service.

  6. In the later 70s, yes, GO units were leased on weekends when available as you state.
