The former Midland Rwy reached its' namesake on Georgian Bay in the 1800s. The CN station pictured here is now gone, as is the track and everything associated with it. In 1994 the "Rail Trail" was opened up along the old railroad route, as being done in so many localities. Midland Dock was the end of this line in from Orillia, and at one time a lot of Georgian Bay shipping went on here, mostly grain and lumber. In this view, CN 1206 and caboose wait out the now quiet weekend. I'm disappointed a big annoying pole is in the photo, but it could not be helped. Slightly too big for my clippers. :o)

  1. Looks like a windy day. Both flags are stretched right out in the background. How great to have engine and caboose parked out the front. The scene is complete. :-)

  2. AWESOME!!! I used to rent a cottage near midland and I’ve become fascinated with the Midland Sub but it’s so hard to find photos, THANKS SO MUCH!!!

  3. Oh great. A satisfied viewer!!! Very glad this stuff is appreciated.

  4. I found that very observant of you, Mr. 1014 :o ) Looks like a proper gale coming in off Georgian Bay. That is one thing that made the area so popular. Wind blowing in cooled the air somewhat in summer, and warmed the waters.

  5. Weather’s pretty unpredictable there too!

  6. Yet another entry in the Mooney Historic Station Collection.
Engine and Van too – very nice.

  7. Wow, I mentioned Midland two weeks ago and bam, here it is. Thank you for posting this. Now that Unimin is gone, the sole survivor is the Townhouse elevator. Interestingly enough, the second last ship built at Midland Shipyards, was scrapped only 4-5 years ago. I was too young to witness the rail activity, but was around to see the line to Penetang being transformed into a snowmobile trail.

  8. Neil: I posted this as per your ‘request’. I’m surprised this image is as popular as it has been so far.

  9. If you have more Midland/Midland Sub material it would be greatly appreciated!

  10. I’ll second the request for more photos of the area. I just missed seeing the operations on the Midland and Port McNicoll subs.

  11. I missed most of the operations here too, as it is quite a drive from home. Slim pickins, but I’ll watch for stuff. Thanks, guys.

  12. Great post Mr. Mooney, thank you for again posting. My parents had us just outside of Midland in summers growing up, though rare was a trip to town and lucky for them had I known CN operated I likely would’ve spoiled the vacation begging to go haha. Now up there myself in summers and I had all but forgotten this line existed except the bridge crossing over #12 as a reminder.

Curious to know more about this line if anyone has info.

Try this link Paul, it has a very detailed article on the operations of the Midland Sub in 1985.

  15. sorry, 46 my bad.

  16. I do appreciate the link to information on the Midland Sub. Mucho thanks !!!

  17. I felt blessed when I found it, your very welcome.

  18. Thank you very much for the link Oakvillesub5!

  19. Thanks for taking my request and posting, again this photo is amazing to me. There seems to be little to no documentation of the operations in Midland online. I’m glad that some of you older fellows captured these better times.

  20. I grew up in Midland, really sad to go home and see everything gone. It was a busy place when I was a kid, CN & CP came in, grain trains.
The two MLW M420TR’s ran when new on this line!

  21. Pity how everything has gone quiet. It was nice to be able to drive the countryside and each little town you came to there was something in the railroad theme to photograph.
