ALL THAT REMAINS. Just west of Avondale, lies the longest remaining stretch of the former Newfoundland Railway mainline. For 1.8 miles, this section of track survived the dismantling program thanks to the hard work of the Avondale Heritage Society who also managed to preserve the Provinces' oldest wooden station in that community. With the backdrop of the Blue Hills, the last official scheduled train to run past this area was Terra Transport Extra 944 East heading to St. John's with five NF210's, two gondolas of scrap metal and a caboose on a rainy September 29, 1988. A testament to the track crews is evident in the remarkable condition of the line a quarter of a century later, considering that no maintenance has been since that time.

  1. And to think…that’s way cleaner than our mainline

  2. I agree with the Docta. Where is the grass, weeds and trees growing between the ties. Or that’s some real long lasting Roundup that they used.

  3. The indentation in the foreground is from ATV’s running alongside the track. That would explain some of it.
